Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini expresses interest in signing Steven Gerrard

Steven Gerrard’s Liverpool contract expires at the end of the season

Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini has said that he would be interested in acquiring the services of Steven Gerrard if he decides to leave Liverpool at the end of the season. Gerrard has spent his entire club career with Liverpool and has been a loyal servant, rejecting lucrative offers to move to other clubs in the past.

But his 16-year career at the Anfield club might be coming to an end, having revealed in an interview with Telegraph Sport on Friday that he is yet to hold talks over an extension to his current contract, which expires at the end of this season.

Although Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has been quick to quell such talk by stressing his desire to extend the Liverpool captain’s stay, the club hierarchy will have to act quickly if they want to do so with Pellegrini on the prowl.

Quotes from Pellegrini on Gerrard

The 61-year old Chilean, after all, snapped up another Premier League veteran in Frank Lampard during the summer once it was announced that he was bringing his 13-year spell at Chelsea to an end.

"I don’t ever rate players on their age," Pellegrini said. "It depends on the money they cost and the number of years they can play for. Like Frank Lampard, Steven Gerrard is a top player and he can continue at a high level for a couple more years.”

"It's quite straightforward. I had a meeting with Steven's representative explaining the situation. I very much want him to be a part of what we are doing here,” he adds. "He's been a brilliant captain for me. I relayed that to the ownership. I'm sure he will go away with that and hopefully his representative will organise a deal.”

"Steven is very much part of what I'm doing here. He's a unique player, a unique talent," he concluded.

Gerrard, however, might not be keen on playing for any other than Premier League club other than Liverpool, which will be understandable considering his rich legacy at the club. If so, he will have absolutely no problem in attracting interest from abroad. New York Cosmos, for one, have already shown interest, and it won’t be a surprise if the elite clubs of Europe do so too.
