Why Chelsea need another striker this January

Fernando Torres and Demba Ba

He may have splashed the cash to bring in five attacking midfielders but Roman Abramovich spent nothing to add another striker during Roberto Di Matteo’s reign, as he was confident 50m Fernando Torres would come good.

His Golden Boot performance at Euro 2012 was probably why his owner had so much faith in him. But after ahving scored 13 goals in all competitions for Chelsea, it was clearly not enough to justify his huge price tag now was it? Now having completed 2 years at Stamford Bridge, Torres still struggles to find the net on a regular basis.

The second senior striker, Daniel Sturridge – out-of-favor under RDM – joined Liverpool earlier this month, which led to Abramovich dishing out 7 million on Demba Ba from Newcastle United after failing to lure Atletico Madrid ace Radamel Falcao,

Chelsea still have only two striking options in Demba Ba and Fernando Torres. Ba who scored twice on debut, has proved what he brings to the club. In Capital One Cup semi-final, Chelsea missed that performance as Torres flopped miserably. Let’s hope Ba makes the difference as the season progresses.

But one thing that Abramovich and the Chelsea management must take care about is his bad injury record in career. If they depend on Ba for week-in, week-out, there’s a possibility his knee might give in. As Torres is misfiring himself such a situation would be a great blow.

Another barrier for Chelsea’s striking department is their Europa League involvement. Since Ba played in Europa League for Newcastle this season, he will be unable to represent Chelsea. So if Chelsea want to win a trophy, they would need another proven striker this January. Swansea’s Michu seems the perfect fit.

When Michu joined Swansea City from Rayo Vallecano in last summer for 2 million, many football pundits said he wouldn’t be able to cope with the physical pressures of football in England as compared to possession football played in Spain. But he has so far played with no pressure and proved himself in the Premier League within a few weeks. Michu is now one behind Robin Van Persie and Luiz Suarez, which makes him hot favorite of big clubs in Premier League and the Welsh team officials have admitted that they cannot keep this rising star for a long time. They also made it clear that if a considerable amount is put forward by any club, the deal will be done.

Chelsea should really consider signing him as he will certainly not disappoint.
