Gwyneth Paltrow, an American actress and wellness entrepreneur, has never shied away from trying out unconventional wellness treatments. She has popularized the practice of vaginal steaming and has been a vocal advocate for using alternative health treatments to address health problems.

In an appearance this week on Will Cole's podcast "The Art of Being Well," Paltrow revealed the weirdest wellness thing she has ever done: rectal ozone therapy. That raised several questions about the safety and effectiveness of the treatment.

Rectal ozone therapy is a form of alternative therapy that involves the insertion of a tube into the rectum, through which ozone gas is delivered.

Ozone gas is composed of three oxygen atoms and is used to disinfect things. Proponents of rectal ozone therapy claim that it can improve circulation, boost immune system and treat a variety of health problems, including arthritis, cancer and HIV.

However, despite its purported benefits, there's little scientific evidence to support the use of rectal ozone therapy for medical purposes. In fact, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a warning against the use of ozone therapy, saying that it can cause serious health problems, including lung damage, seizures and even death.

While there are some anecdotal reports of people benefiting from the treatment, there are also many risks associated with the practice. The insertion of a tube into the rectum can cause damage to the delicate tissues in the area, leading to bleeding, infection and other complications.

Moreover, the delivery of ozone gas into the body can cause serious health problems, particularly if too much gas is delivered. It's important to note that there are other, more effective treatments available for the health problems that rectal ozone therapy is purported to treat.

For example, arthritis can be managed with physical therapy, anti-inflammatory medication and lifestyle changes. Cancer can be treated with surgery, chemotherapy and radiation therapy, while HIV can be managed with antiretroviral medication.

Risks and side effects of ozone therapy

There are some potential risks and side effects to be aware of before undergoing ozone therapy. These include:

  • Mild to moderate pain in the area being treated. That's usually temporary, but if it persists or exacerbates, you should contact your doctor immediately.
  • Redness or irritation of the skin where ozone is applied (it can also happen if you use too much). If that happens, wash off any remaining lotion or cream from your skin with cool water, and pat dry gently with a soft towel - do not rub.
  • You may also want to apply an over-the-counter hydrocortisone cream for relief from any itching or burning sensations that might occur too.
  • Severe allergic reactions like swelling around the eyes; difficulty breathing; hives, dizziness; nausea/vomiting

While it's commendable to seek out alternative treatments for health problems, it's important to be cautious when trying out new therapies. The risks associated can outweight the benefits, and there are other, more effective treatments available for the health problems it's purported to treat.

If you're considering rectal ozone therapy or any other alternative treatment, it's important to speak with a qualified healthcare professional to ensure that you're making an informed decision about your health.
