Guptill’s fiery innings gave New Zealand a solid start

After defeating India in the World T20 opener, New Zealand were riding high on confidence as they prepared to face their trans-Tasman rivals, Australia. The men from Oz, meanwhile, were looking to make an early statement in the tournament by starting off with a win.The Kiwi openers took their team off to a flying start, scoring 58 in the powerplay. But Australia pegged back the batsmen to restrict them to a total of 142, which seemed distinctly below-par at the halfway stage. But New Zealand aren't considered the dark horses of the tournament for nothing. Australia, despite getting a great start, could not maintain their tempo after the fall of wicket of Usman Khawaja. The New Zealand bowlers bowled a tight line and length to pull out a well-earned eight-run win, and suddenly they are looking like one of the tournament favourites. There were memorable moments aplenty in the match, moments that don't fade away from memory - much like the Axe Signature line of body perfumes. Here we take a look at the 5 most unforgettable episodes:

#1 Guptill\'s three huge sixes off Agar

Guptill’s fiery innings gave New Zealand a solid start

After his bad showing in the match against India, Martin Guptill was itching to live up to his reputation of being an attacking opener. In the match against Australia today, he silenced all his critics.

Although his first boundary came off an edge in the first over, Guptill smashed Ashton Agar for three powerful sixes in the third over of the match.

Steve Smith brought on Agar knowing Guptill’s weakness against spin, but Guptill was up to the task, dispatching two full tosses for two sixes in the first two balls of the over. He finished the massacre with another six to add more misery to the Australian bowlers.

#2 Glenn Maxwell produces a game-changing moment in the field

Maxwell’s catch helped Australi restrict New Zealand to a low total

After New Zealand scored 58 in the first six overs, it looked like they were set for a big total, with Guptill seemingly taking the game away from Australia.

That is when Steve Smith brought on T20 specialist James Faulkner to bowl. On the first ball of the eighth over, Guptill decided to take on the left-arm medium pacer and attempted to clear the midwicket boundary.

Glenn Maxwell, who was fielding at long-on, ran towards his right and latched on to an excellent running catch just within the boundary line. This wicket helped Australia get back into the game and ultimately played a huge role in restricting the Kiwis to under 150.

#3 Colin Munro invents a new shot

Colin Munro playing his ‘new shot’

New Zealand's number three Colin Munro has developed a bit of a reputation for being an innovative stroke-player, and he took that to a whole new level today.

With Maxwell being handed the ball for the 13th over, the time was ripe for the Kiwis to launch an attack on the bowlers. The left-handed Munro promptly got ready for a switch hit off the very first ball of the over, but Maxwell's delivery was far too short to sweep the ball away.

So what does Munro do? He dabs it past the wicket-keeper with a delicate late cut, except that he was still in the 'reverse' position! The shot would have been the perfect late cut for a right-hander, but Munro stunned the bowler and keeper by making the adjustment so perfectly.

That was a moment that every spectator will remember for a long time to come. We will have to wait and see if Munro turns this unique stroke into his signature shot!

#4 Santner deceives Smith with the perfect delivery

Smith was deceived by a brilliant delivery from Santner

After Steve Smith hit a brilliant cover drive off the second ball he faced, it seemed like he would help the Aussies chase down yet another total. However, New Zealand captain Kane Williamson’s masterstroke to bring on Mitchell Santner to bowl the seventh over paid off immediately.

After troubling Smith for two balls, Santner got the better of the Australian captain as he spun the ball sharply away from the batsman, who had come down the track attempting to send the ball beyond the boundary.

The only place the ball reached was the gloves of Luke Ronchi, who easily knocked the bails off to send Smith back to the dressing room. It was the perfect delivery for a slow left-arm bowler, and Smith will not forget it anytime soon.

#5 Khawajas run-out turns the fortunes around

usman khawaja
Khawaja’s wicket changed the course of the match

After earning a place ahead of former captain Aaron Finch, Usman Khawaja proved exactly why he is rated so highly in Australia.

Right from the word go the southpaw was in sublime form, timing the ball very well to the boundary. He ended up scoring 38 off just 27 balls, hitting 6 fours in the process, and was the best candidate to help Australia chase down the target on a tricky pitch.

Khawaja never seemed like getting out, and the only way that could have happened was through a run-out. And that's exactly what happened, as a good throw from Adam Milne had Khawaja sliding, but falling just short of the crease.

His dismissal changed the complexion of the game completely, and Australia were left just short in the end as none of the following batsmen could read the pitch as well as Khawaja.
