5 surprising moments from WWE SummerSlam 2019

I guess we should take Seth Rollins' word seriously from now

Bray Wyatt is a genius.

WWE SummerSlam was a truly fun night of wrestling. You had an excellent match with a WWE legend, the best Brock Lesnar has been this whole year, a truly terrifying debut and a real surprise title change. The WWE seems to be in very good shape heading into the fall after this SummerSlam show. Let us hope they keep the momentum going.

As I am still figuring out how I can possibly sleep after Bray Wyatt’s amazing entrance, I will try to distract myself and present my list of the top five most surprising moments of WWE Summerslam 2019:

#5 Dolph Ziggler Gets Destroyed Again and Again

Dolph Ziggler with that never say die attitude. It sure got him a lot of spears at SummerSlam

Who knew that Dolph Ziggler is such comedy gold?

I believe most WWE fans knew Ziggler never stood a real chance against Goldberg. In fact, I am really surprised that Dolph Ziggler actually got in any offense at all. He should be proud of that, I guess. Bill Goldberg did what he has always done best - destroying his opponents in impressive and quick fashion. He should never try a lengthy match ever again.

The real surprising moment was what came after the squash match. Dolph Ziggler kept asking for more punishment and thought it was a really good idea to insult Goldberg over and over again. He received a lot of spears for his efforts.

I have heard Ziggler was a stand-up comedian. He proved it on Sunday by taking a major beating from the 52 year-old Goldberg in a very entertaining way. I am just disappointed that we didn't see Dolph Ziggler continue to mock Goldberg later on in the show.

#4 WWE Championship Match Ends In A Count-out

I believe most WWE fans want to see clean ending to their title matches. Especially with a WWE Championship match, it makes logical sense to have a clear finish for the WWE SummerSlam show. That is clearly not what we got on Sunday in Toronto.

The story going into the match was Kofi Kingston needed to prove himself against Randy Orton. Orton was the man who had held Kofi Kingston down all those years ago. For Kofi Kingston to win clean would be a real validation that all his critics were clearly wrong. Naturally, it ended in a boring count-out instead.

That match itself was pretty unspectacular. Randy Orton works a pretty slow pace and it seemed to take the crowd out of the lengthy match. When Orton hit the RKO it seemed to signal an abrupt ending. But then Kofi rolled out of the ring and Randy Orton proceeded to get in a lengthy argument with Kofi’s son. He got distracted and got counted out. In the words of Randy Orton, that was “Stupid!”

#3 Trish Stratus And Charlotte Flair Have The Match Of The Night

If that was Trish's last match, it was quite the ending. Thank you Trish
If that was Trish's last match, it was quite the ending. Thank you Trish

Trish Stratus “retired” from in-ring competition in 2006. On Sunday night, she had her first singles match in nearly thirteen years. That is a fact that shouldn’t be ignored. Not only was it a really solid match, but it was likely the match of the night. That isn’t bad for a 43 year old WWE legend.

Trish Stratus was a solid worker but she rarely worked the pace and length that she did on Sunday night. That was one of the better WWE main roster Women’s matches you will see in 2019. It had incredible work rate for a seventeen minute match.

Charlotte Flair gets a lot of grief for her constant push but she always delivers in the ring. She is among the best workers in the company. She showed it by working a great match with a wrestler who was basically retired. That is a truly impressive feat.

I am sure a lot of people were sad Trish Stratus lost, but it was the right result. The legend put over a current talent in a meaningful way. If that was Trish’s last match she should be quite proud. She stole the show on Sunday.

#2 Seth Rollins Wins the WWE Universal Championship

You cannot deny Seth Rollins pulled out all the stops at SummerSlam. Brock Lesnar clearly did his part in the match as well

I guess Seth Rollins' guarantees really mean something. He proved he can back up his words from Monday Night Raw in a major way on a big stage.

The main event of SummerSlam was a lot of fun. Brock Lesnar can put on a good show if he is in the right mood. It seemed he was in the right mood against Seth Rollins. They worked a fast fifteen minute match that showed more Lesnar offense then we usually ever see. Why can’t we see this Brock Lesnar more often?

After many believable near falls, Seth Rollins pinned Brock Lesnar clean after a Curb Stomp. It is still surprising to see that Lesnar now has lost two matches to Rollins in the same year.

It would seem this is the true end of Brock Lesnar’s run on Monday Night Raw. I am guessing it means we will see him on SmackDown in the future. Hopefully the motivated Brock Lesnar we saw on Sunday will be the one on Fox in starting this October.

#1 The Fiend Has The Best WWE Debut In Years

Well it isn't like I wanted to sleep anyway, WWE
Well it isn't like I wanted to sleep anyway, WWE

Is that a human head?

A lot of WWE fans have been excited for “The Fiend” Bray Wyatt’s debut at SummerSlam. Bray has done an amazing job building his character with the impressive “Firefly Fun House” segments and brief glimpses of the unsettling Fiend Mask.

But could it live up to the hype that pro wrestling fans had for this very unique character? Judging by the reactions of the fans in the arena and the online response, I would say it is a resounding yes.

The Fiend has one of the scariest entrances I have ever seen in pro wrestling. The lights, the tron, the new heavy metal mix of his theme song and the mask truly sell this new character. And he has a lantern that looks like Bray Wyatt’s real-life head of his old gimmick. It was crazy. Thankfully, Finn Balor had the same reaction to it that we all did. Complete shock.

The Fiend has a new move set that fits his scary character. Finn never stood a chance. Then “The Fiend” simply left in an equally impressive fashion. The crowd simply chanted “This is awesome!”. It sure was, and hopefully the WWE doesn’t mess up this amazing new character.
