Spotted by Sting and Lex Luger, a former american footballer rather reluctantly agreed to give pro wrestling a shot in 1997. What that man went on to do in the business was something no one before and no one ever since has done – a 173 match winning streak against some of the best in the business. The man was William Scott “Bill” Goldberg better known as Goldberg to any wrestling fan worth their salt. We take a look at 5 of his biggest matches ever

Goldberg defeats Raven for the WCW US Heavyweight Championship

In around 6 months Goldberg had made a name for himself in the WCW by taking his opponents apart in the space of 2-3 minutes and his undefeated streak was also being advertised by the WCW to the audience whenever he made his way to the ring. On April 20th 1998, he challenged Raven for the WCW US Heavyweight championship which Raven had won the night before at Spring Stampede. Goldberg cleaned out Raven and his ‘Flock’ who interfered in the match (Perfectly legal due to the stipulations of Raven’s Rules) and claimed his first ever championship gold and his 75th straight win.

Goldberg defeats Hulk Hogan for the WCW World Heavyweight Championship

Hogan decided to challenge Golberg after the Georgian continued to put his opponents into the ground one after the other. The match was set for the July 6, 1998 edition of RAW in front of his home crowd in Atlanta, Georgia. However, Hogan forced him to compete in another match defending the US Heavyweight title against Scott Hall. Goldberg came through in theat match and faced off with the leader of the NWO in the main event match. Unfortunately for Hogan, the script remained the same as Golberg captured the WCW Heavyweight Championship and went 108-0.

Golberg defends the WCW World Heavyweight Championship against Sting

Golberg faced off against he man that had scouted him out – Sting – on 14th September 1998, still undefeated and just a week away from the first anniversary of his debut in wrestling. This was one of those matches in which the fans didn’t know just who they wanted to support, with both wrestlers getting great reactions. In a match that was quite evenly contested, Golberg won the match after executing the Jackhammer slam on Sting. However, the match could have gone the other way had Hulk Hogan not kicked Sting on the head when he had the Scorpion death lock applied on Goldberg.

Goldberg vs Bret Hart (Starrcade 1999) for the WCW World Heavyweight Championship

Goldberg and Bret Hart became quite a team in 1999 and even won the WCW tag-team together. However, despite a bad fallout they still went ahead with the match in WCW’s last PPV of the millennium. The match though ended in a controversial fashion as Roddy Piper re-enacted the Montreal screw job, this time though it was not the Hitman who got screwed

Golberg vs The Rock – Backlash 2003When Goldberg debuted in the WWE in 2003 he went after the biggest one in the business – The Rock – telling him that he was next. The clash took place at the main event of the Backlash PPV and in his in ring debut, Goldberg didn’t disappoint. He first Rock Bottomed the Rock, and then kicked out after the very same move was used on him. He then did the same after a People’s elbow and then hammered the Rock with his deadly finishing combo to pick up his first ever win the WWE.
