WWE official says CM Punk's return brought a tear to his eye (Exclusive)

CM Punk shocked the wrestling world by returning to WWE in November 2023 after almost a decade away from the company. In an exclusive interview, veteran WWE referee Charles Robinson gave his thoughts on The Best in the World's long-awaited return.

Punk cemented his status as one of WWE's most beloved superstars during his initial nine-year run with the company. In 2014, he famously walked out due to persistent injuries and creative frustrations with Triple H and Vince McMahon.

Speaking to Sportskeeda Wrestling Senior Editor Bill Apter, Robinson only had positive things to say about Punk. The official also revealed he became emotional when his long-time friend returned at Survivor Series: WarGames 2023.

"Well, for me personally CM Punk is one of my favorite guys, so I was very, very excited when he came back, you know? Had a tear in my eye. Why? Because I love CM Punk as a person. Period," said Robinson. [3:32 – 3:46]

Charles Robinson's dream CM Punk match

On January 27, CM Punk tore his triceps in the 2024 Men's Royal Rumble Match. The Straight Edge Superstar looked on course to face Seth Rollins at WrestleMania XL. However, due to the injury, he could not compete at the event.

Asked to name a dream opponent for Punk, Charles Robinson jokingly suggested his lookalike and hero, Ric Flair. He then mentioned Rollins and Cody Rhodes as alternatives.

"Yeah, that [Punk vs. Rhodes] would be good. Hey, let's do that. I don't know, maybe Seth, you know? Would be a great match. I think that would be a great, great match," said Robinson. [4:22 – 4:36]

After the April 26 episode of SmackDown, Punk gave the fans in attendance an update on his injury status.
