WWE: CM Punk's contract nearing its end, no official word on renewal yet

CM Punk’s contract to expire by June

As noted earlier, CM Punk’s contract with the WWE will expire this month on July 17. With the recent turn of events including some surprising high profile superstar returns, the focus has shifted away from him. But his contract matter will certainly have everyone’s attention in the coming weeks.

It’s the first week of July which means that WWE officials will certainly have to make a decision on his future in the company. Even though Punk himself stated that he has retired from the company, WWE has to decide whether they choose to renew his contract or let him leave.

It brings us to the similar matter concerning Rey Mysterio’s contract status which was discussed a few months ago. WWE chose to extend his contract for a year more to compensate for the time he missed due to injuries. It is important to note here that all superstars have a clause in their WWE contract which states that the company can extend the contract based on the wrestlers not performing for an extended period of time due to an injury.

So WWE can automatically renew Punk’s contract according to the mentioned terms. They could do that in July should they choose to. The advantage is that they could stop him from working for anyone else. The disadvantage is if they did renew it, they'd have to pay him his downside, which right now, they wouldn't be paying him since he's refusing to work.

For now, Punk still appears on WWE.com’s official roster page.

CM Punk still included in the list of superstars on WWE’s official page

It remains to be seen how WWE deals with the situation in the coming weeks. But we will certainly have an official word on the matter.
