WWE News: Returning Superstar replaces Kofi Kingston at Fastlane

What's the story?

The WWE Championship picture can change in a small moment. That's exactly what happened this time as well.

Kofi Kingston might have earned his spot in the main event and his WWE Championship spot after 11 years of working for the company, but a few words from Mr McMahon were able to take away everything that he had worked for.

Just as Kingston was about to sign the contract, Mr McMahon came out and congratulated Kofi. However, he said that it was his job to make sure that the best WWE Championship match happened, and so he needed to replace Kofi Kingston -- and he did -- with Kevin Owens.

In case you didn't know...

Kevin Owens has been away from action for a long time. He picked up several injuries in the latter half of 2018 and had to take time away from the company to make sure that he could recover from all of his injuries. There have been hints at his return to action, but it was not the return that the WWE Universe wanted.

On the other hand, Kofi Kingston has been working his way to the top of the company for the past 11 years. Vince McMahon appears to be making a gimmick of replacing the WWE Universe's favorite Superstar in championship matches. He did the same for Becky Lynch's match as well.

The heart of the matter

Kofi Kingston was finally about to get his one-on-one shot at the WWE Championship after having earned the title shot in the past few weeks for WWE Fastlane.

He was about to finalize the title shot, but just then, Vince McMahon came out to announce that the WWE Universe deserved the best possible match, and that's what he needed to give them. For that reason, he needed to replace Kofi Kingston for the main event.

To the shock and disgust of the WWE Universe and the New Day, Kofi Kingston was replaced with a returning Kevin Owens.

What's next?

The New Day protested, while Kingston simply looked -- defeated. It was as if the air had been taken from under his wings.

Kevin Owens will be competing against Daniel Bryan for the WWE Championship, but Kofi Kingston is sure to not let this lie.
