What's the story?

One of the big surprises of the 2019 Royal Rumble was Nia Jax's entry in the men's Royal Rumble, after she took up the place of R-Truth as the #30 entry.

Wrestling Observer Radio have now revealed the reason why WWE decided to add the former RAW Women's Champion to the men's Royal Rumble.

In case you didn't know...

Nia Jax entered the women's Royal Rumble as #29 of the 30 women competitors, going on to be in the Rumble for 11:59, before she was eliminated by Becky Lynch. Lynch went on to eventually win the Rumble, after she eliminated Charlotte Flair.

In the men's Royal Rumble, Jax was the 30th and last entrant after she assaulted R-Truth, who earned the right to be the last entrant in the Rumble after winning the Mixed Match Challenge with Carmella.

Jax eliminated SmackDown's Mustafa Ali, becoming the first Superstar to get an elimination in the men's and women's Royal Rumble. She was then eliminated by Rey Mysterio from the competition.

The heart of the matter

According to Wrestling Observer Radio, the reason WWE chose to add Jax to the men's Royal Rumble match was to bring in more intergender matches in the WWE. The report states that viewers were unhappy that men and women couldn't wrestle each other in the two seasons of the Mixed Match Challenge (which was incidentally won by R-Truth and Carmella in December 2018).

This following week on RAW, WWE teased once again, the prospect of intergender matches as Nia Jax entered the ring when Dean Ambrose was to say something, and then threw him out of the ring.

What's next?

For now, Jax and her tag team partner, Tamina, will be focussing on the new women's tag team titles, after qualifying for the Elimination Chamber match this past week on RAW.
