The Houston Astros entered the 2024 season looking to lock down their eighth straight divisional finish. However, after a very rocky start to the season, doubt is emerging as to whether or not the club can even get a postseason berth.

In the two weeks preceding this writing, the Astros have scored just 39 runs, ranking them 24th out of 30 teams in the category during that time. Unlike last season, when the team could rely on bats up and down their lineup, some big names have been faltering in 2024.

3 Astros players off to a bad start in 2024

Jose Abreu

The winner of the 2020 AL MVP as a member of the Chicago White Sox, Jose Abreu had a hard time adjusting to his new team when he joined last year. After starting off cold, the Cuban first baseman did not end up hitting a home run until June and finished the year with a mere .237 batting average.

This year, the picture is significantly worse for the 37-year-old Abreu. Through 20 games, Jose Abreu is hitting just .081, and has only recorded a single RBI so far.

Hunter Brown

After last season, hopes were high for young pitcher Hunter Brown. In 31 appearances, Brown battled to a 5.09 ERA and a record of 11-13. While these numbers were nothing sensational, Houston Astros fans hoped that 2024 would be stronger.

However, the 25-year-old right hander appears to have moved backwards. Now with a 9.68 ERA on the season, Brown is without a win, and lasted just 0.2 of an inning against the Kansas City Royals on April 11 before allowing nine earned runs and getting pulled.

Alex Bregman

One of the Astros' premier sluggers, Alex Bregman's numbers so far this season are concerning, especially given that the third baseman will become a free agent after his five-year, $100 million deal expires in November.

In 34 at-bats for the Houston Astros this season, Bregman has recorded just six hits, four RBIs, and no home runs. Currently a .176 hitter, the two-time All-Star has communicated that he is not yet concerned with his sagging batting numbers.
