Can Antoine Davis still break Pistol Pete’s NCAA scoring record? Reports suggests Detroit Mercy Titans' guard can have another shot at acing record

Can Antoine Davis still break Pistol Pete’s NCAA scoring record? (Detroit Mercy v Michigan State)

Antoine Davis fell just shy of breaking Pistol Pete Maravich's longstanding NCAA record on Thursday when the Detroit Mercy fell to Youngstown State 71-66. The Horizon League Tournament quarterfinal matchup saw Davis come up three points shy of Maravich's career scoring record of 3,667 points.

Heading into the game, Davis needed 26 points to surpass Maravich's record, however, he shot just 7-for-26 with a field-goal percentage of 26.9%. That included going 4-for-16 from beyond the arc. With four fouls and five turnovers, his 38 minutes could have been better.

Despite his best efforts at a deep 3-pointer to tie the record, Davis' missed attempt means that his career with the Detroit Mercy Titans (14-19) has ended unless the team draws a postseason invitation. As he prepares to likely declare for the NBA draft, he spoke about the opportunity to even come close to Maravich's record:

"It’s really special. Maybe in 20 or 25 years somebody is going to be doing the same thing that I did, chase that record, maybe even sooner than that. It’s just a special feeling. I don’t take any of this for granted at all. I’m thankful for this. Blessed. I still feel like I’m the best scorer of my generation. Nobody can take that from me."

Of course, if the team gets an invite to a postseason tournament, Davis would suit up for the team again and get another crack at the record.

The Sporting News on Friday reported that the CBI is mulling inviting Detroit Mercy. That would give Davis, who has had five college seasons because of COVID-19, one more chance to top Maravich, who played only three seasons at LSU because freshmen could not play varsity basketball at the time.

Skip and Shannon weigh in on Antoine Davis' record

As they often do, Skip Bayless and Shannon Sharpe went to battle with one another over how impressive Davis' chase of Maravich has been.

While many have been blown away by Davis' recent play, the fact that he has come within arm's reach of greatness is impressive. With his father, Mike Davis, who replaced legendary coach Bobby Knight in Indiana, many have enjoyed seeing the father-son duo.

According to Skip Bayless, who is a massive Pistol Pete fan, the connection that Davis shares with the basketball legend is remarkable.

"I love this kid. He's a good kid, and he has a lot of talent but I love the fact that Mike Davis told Antoine, his son, when he was a little kid, if you want to learn to play this game, you go watch Pete Maravich instructional videos.
"He told his son he's the only superstar who could actually explain how he did what he did."

Shanon Sharpe then responded, weighing in on the connection and the chance Davis could have to make history if Detroit gets an invite into the postseason.

"He's averaged basically 20 more points a game in 60 fewer games. I mean, so, just imagine if Maravich had stayed another year. Nobody would have ever even come close."
