He is 6 feet and 7 inches tall and was born in Gilbert, Arizona, on March 3, 1999. He went to Basha High School in Arizona, where he averaged 14.2 points and 9.4 rebounds in the 2016-17 season, helping his team win the state championship at GCU Arena. McGlothan then transferred to Putnam Science Academy in Putnam, Connecticut, for the 2017-18 season, where he helped his team win the national prep championship.

Gabe McGlothan attended Southeast Missouri State University in 2018 before transferring to the Grand Canyon in 2019. The power forward spent four seasons with the Antelopes under coach Bryce Drew. McGlothan has 1,562 career points, with 1,329 coming in his four years at GCU. During his senior year, he received First-team All-WAC accolades and three WAC Player of the Week awards. After declaring for the 2024 NBA Draft, he went undrafted, signing an Exhibit-10 contract with the Denver Nuggets and playing for their G League team, the Grand Rapids Gold.
