Jamahl Mosley’s road to becoming the head coach of the Orlando Magic was unconventional but worth the journey. Growing up in San Diego, California, Jamahl found his key to success by learning basketball.

Playing for the Rancho Buena Vista High School in Vista, California, Jamahl developed into one of the best Basketball Athletes in San Diego County which earned him the California Interscholastic Federation Player of the Year award in 1997.

After he graduated from high school, Jamahl enrolled in the University of Colorado as a 6 '8, well-built Small Forward. In his four years of College ball for the Colorado Buffaloes, Jamahl emerged as a top performer and contributor for his team, averaging 11.4 points, 6.6 rebounds, 0.7 steals, and 0.6 blocks a game. His impressive gameplay and performance during the 1999-2000 season even earned him an All-Big 12 conference selection.

Despite his abilities and potential as a top college athlete, Jamahl went undrafted in the 2001 NBA Draft and so decided to take his talents overseas. After taking an early retirement in 2005, Mosley made the ultimate decision to capitalize on his basketball knowledge and began his NBA career as an assistant coach for the Denver Nuggets.

Jamahl Mosley Teams Coached

Mosley has served as coach for the Denver Nuggets, the Cleveland Cavaliers, the Dallas Mavericks, and the Orlando Magic.

As Assistant Coach

Jamahl Mosley began in the NBA as an assistant coach, more specifically, as a player development coach for the Denver Nuggets. While overseeing talent development and consistency, player development coaches are required to engage with the players and assist their progress on the court.

Throughout his career as an assistant coach, Mosley was instrumental in leading his teams to eight playoff appearances. He always prioritized fruitful interactions with players in the team and worked to cultivate a positive, winning mindset.

As Head Coach

On July 11, 2021, Jamahl Mosley agreed to a four-year deal and took on the offer as head coach of the Orlando Magic. Spending seven years under the guidance and supervision of Rick Carlisle, Mosley was the obvious choice among other options.

Though his Rookie coaching season wasn’t witness to a great start as the Magic finished their 2021-22 season with 22 wins and 60 losses, his following season as head coach showed further individual improvement along with improvement in team performance as the Magic finished their season 34-48.

With the next NBA season starting October 24, all eyes will be on Mosley’s coaching ability and the Orlando Magic’s young, core talent.
