Jose Alvarado

Known more commonly by his nickname ‘Grand Theft Alvarado’, Jose Alvarado is known for his ability to create steals and is among the more beloved players in the NBA. He plays as a backup point guard for the New Orleans Pelicans.

Growing up, Alvarado initially took to football, the national sport of his nation. However soon after, he switched to basketball after injuring his neck. Born in New York, Alvarado played for the Christ the King Regional High School in Middle Village, Queens, and excelled there. As a senior, he recorded a quadruple-double with 18 points, 10 rebounds, 10 assists and 10 steals. Alvarado was a four-star recruit and committed to play for Georgia Tech.

As a freshman at Georgia Tech, Alvarado started in all 25 games and averaged 12.1 points, 3.7 rebounds, and 3.1 assists per game. However, he had a season-ending elbow injury in 2018. In his sophomore season, Alvarado had an increased role with the departure of future NBA player Josh Okogie. This saw Alvarado averaging 12.5 points, 3.9 rebounds, and 3.4 assists per game, leading his team in points, assists, and steals.

In his junior season, Alvarado upped his scoring by averaging 14.4 points, 3.4 rebounds, 4.0 assists, and 2.2 steals per game. After his junior season, Alvarado declared for the NBA draft, foregoing his final three years of college eligibility.

Alvarado went undrafted in the 2021 NBA Draft and was picked up by the New Orleans Pelicans on a two-way deal, splitting his time between the Pelicans NBA team and their G League affiliate team. This was the opportunity that Alvarado took and immediately latched onto it, moving up the ranks with his tenacious defense and his unmatched energy on the court. Soon, he became a regular fixture for the Pelicans and was instrumental in their playoff run in the 2022 NBA season. He is currently on a four-year $6.5 million deal with the Pelicans.
