In the National Basketball Association (NBA), a trade is a transaction that involves the movement of players from one basketball franchise to another. While players are the primary trade assets, draft picks and/or cash considerations can also be included, or be the basis for the trade to take place. The trade could involve either the swapping of players along with draft picks and/or cash considerations, or only draft picks (protected or otherwise).
For a trade to be made, the size of the exchanged contracts have to be within 15 percent of each other plus 100k. A player can immediately be traded on to another team, but if the new team wishes to package the player with another, they have to wait 60 days to formulate and execute such a trade.
Following a directive from the Collective Bargaining Agreement of 2017, the NBA trade deadline for any particular season will be exactly 10 days before the All-Star Game, thereby ensuring that the date would be a Thursday. Based on the same rules, the NBA trade deadline for the 2019-20 season would fall on 6 February 2020 with the cutoff time being 3 PM ET.
The NBA allows teams to sign-and-trade a player, i.e, trade the player after signing him to a contract within the stipulated rules of the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA). There is no limit to how many players may be traded in exchange for one - it is only limited by the size of the team’s roster (teams are allowed to have 15 players on their active roster on full contracts and 1 player on a two-way contract between the NBA and the G-League). Chris Paul, for example, was the subject of an 8-players-for-one deal, while in 2007, Kevin Garnett was traded by the Minnesota Timberwolves to the Boston Celtics in exchange for 7 players.
While several interesting sign-and-trades took place, the most interesting one of the lot saw Kevin Durant join the Brooklyn Nets in a move that also featured D'Angelo Russell moving the other way. Another impactful sign-and-trade saw Kemba Walker join the Boston Celtics from the Charlotte Hornets with Terry Rozier going the other direction.
With the postseason delayed due to the four-month hiatus, the offseason is not yet upon us and we haven’t had any player movement till now. However, rumors continue to buzz around about possible trades as teams look to build their rosters for the next season.
Among major players in the fray are Chris Paul and Giannis Antetokounmpo. Many speculate that the two superstars could be traded this offseason. Teams such as the Golden State Warriors and the Brooklyn Nets are in prime position to make it to the Finals next year if they can add a piece or two to their roster.
Among coaches, a surprise hire of Steve Nash as the head coach of the Brooklyn Nets has shocked the entire league with many crying foul over his lack of experience. Some of the other coaching positions that are open include the Philadelphia 76ers, the Indiana Pacers and the Chicago Bulls.
Look forward to some exciting NBA trade rumors this offseason, with many franchise owners looking to turn their teams into contenders for the next season.
