Shai Gilgeous-Alexander’s skills and abilities as a point guard are simply remarkable. He was drafted 11th overall by the Charlotte Hornets in 2018, and was traded to the LA Clippers the same day. Gilgeous-Alexander entered the NBA after a stellar freshman season with the University of Kentucky, a college known for producing some of the most talented basketball players.

After a respectable rookie season with the Clippers, Gilgeous-Alexander was traded to the OKC Thunder. In his first season with the Thunder, he was the team’s leading scorer and finished as the fifth seed in the West. Last season, Gilgeous-Alexander averaged 31.4 points, 4.8 rebounds and 5.5 assists per game in 68 games played. He shot 51.0% from the field, including 34.5% from 3-point range. For the 2023/24 NBA season, Gilgeous-Alexander will earn over $33 million. His current deal runs through the 2026/27 season, where he will earn over $40 million.

In 2023, Gilgeous-Alexander was named an NBA All-Star and was also on the All-NBA First Team.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander Position

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander plays at the point guard position, but can also play as shooting guard when required. He falls under that rare category of players who are known as ‘combo guards’. Combo guards are players that can play both point guard and shooting guard. Players such as Damian Lillard, Stephen Curry, and Trae Young also fall in this category. Their ability to run the offense as well as be the scorer allows them to be lethal on both fronts and Gilgeous-Alexander plays that role to perfection.

What number does Shai Gilgeous-Alexander wear?

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander wears the #2 jersey for the OKC Thunder. In his one year at Kentucky, he wore #22 but that was already taken when he joined the LA Clippers. So he decided to wear number 2 instead. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander does not have any intentions to change his number anytime soon and will wear the number 2 for the foreseeable future.
