The FIBA World Cup, formerly known as FIBA World Championship is a global basketball championship. It is performed by means of diverse groups from all over the globe. This event is mainly handled by the International Basketball Federation.


The current shape of the FIBA World Cup functions 32 teams. The team which wins the tournament receives the Naismith Trophy which was first awarded in 1967. The 32 teams to play in this championship are selected with the assistance of a fifteen-month qualification process. Eighty teams took part in this process from across the four areas of Africa, America, Asia (including Oceania) and Europe. This process started in November 2021 and concluded in February 2023.


A total of 32 teams are decided on from around the world to compete in the 2023 FIBA World Cup. This championship will include 92 games that will be performed throughout the three hosting nations. These nations are the Philippines, Japan and Indonesia. The very last section of the tournament might be held inside the Philippines.

2023 FIBA World Cup Venue


The 19th FIBA World Cup will start on August 25 and finish on September 10. This year, this event is hosted by three nations, the Philippines, Japan, and Indonesia. Indonesia was given this opportunity for the first time to organize a world cup inside the country. The Philippines and Japan had already got this chance before in 1978 and 2006 respectively.


This championship will be held in five separate cities across the three nations. The Greater Manila Area will host the four preliminary-round groups, two second-round groups, and the final tournament phase from the quarter-final onwards. In addition to this, Okinawa and Jakarta will each host two preliminary-round groups and one second-round group. Japan and Indonesia will host eight groups each whereas the Philippines will host 16 teams.

All the venues that are selected in the Philippines have already hosted several games. These venues have hosted various championships including the 2013 FIBA Asia Championship, the 2016 FIBA World Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Manila, and the 5v5 basketball events of the 2019 Southeast Asian Games. The 1978 FIBA World Championship was organized in the Araneta Coliseum.
