Mike Tobey is an American-born international Basketball player who was born in Monroe, New York on October 10, 1994. Mike went to Monroe-Woodbury Middle School and would later attend Blair Academy for High School education. Coming out of Blair Academy, Tobey was one of the top-ranked recruits in the country and eventually committed to Virginia, over offers from Pittsburgh, Maryland, and Xavier among other top institutes.

Mike was one of the best rotation players in the four years he played at the University of Virginia, averaging 6.8 points, four rebounds, and 0.7 blocks per game. Mike had aspirations to play in the NBA but after going undrafted in 2016, it became clear that he had to take a different path to professional basketball.

In October 2016, Mike was acquired by the Greensboro Swarm; the Minor league affiliate of the Charlotte Hornets and played one season with them during which he got to make it to play two regular-season games for the Hornets.

Mike represents team Slovenia in International competitions. Mike initially represented the United States at the FIBA U19 World Championship in 2013 where he averaged 4.8 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 0.6 blocks and helped Team USA win the U19 trophy and the gold medal.

Mike’s next international appearance came after almost eight years in 2021, this time for Slovenia after receiving his Slovenian passport. He competed in the 2020 Olympic Qualifying tournament (held in 2021 due to prior COVID-19 restrictions) and averaged 15 points, 7.5 rebounds, 1.3 steals, and 0.8 rebounds. In the end, Slovenia qualified for the 2020 Summer Olympics thanks to a collective team effort.

In the six games Mike played at the Olympics, he averaged 13.7 points, 10.5 rebounds, and 2.5 assists and helped Slovenia capture a respectable fourth spot.

From 2021 to 2022, Mike played six World Cup qualifier games for Slovenia. In the first four games, Mike put up 13.3 points, 9.8 rebounds, and 1.3 blocks per contest and helped to secure two crucial wins. In the next two games, he did his best with 9.5 points, five boards, and one steal in two games to win one of two matches.

Slovenia finished third in Group J in the second round and qualified for the 2023 FIBA World Cup.

Mike Tobey most recently played at the 2022 EuroBasket and averaged 11.2 points, seven rebounds, 0.5 steals, and one block per game. Mike and the team finished sixth in the tournament with a total of five wins and two losses.

Despite not making it in the NBA, Mike was able to revitalize his career in the Liga ACB and was a core player for Valencia for six seasons before being traded to Barca in late 2022. At age 28, Mike Tobey has achieved notable success and continues to be an excellent player for Slovenia.
