He played for Choctawhatchee High School with his older brother, Jaden Newell, under the head coach Andrew Thigpen as a freshman. He played under Michael Memmen as a sophomore. During his sophomore season, he averaged 14.0 points, 8.7 rebounds, and 2.3 assists as led his team into the first round of Florida's Class 5A state championship. He spent his junior year at Montverde Academy under the leadership of Kevin Boyle. As a junior, he scored 6.6 points and grabbed 5.2 rebounds per game, and helped Montverde post a 24-3 record. They were ranked as the No. 1 team in national rankings. As a senior, Newell averaged 11.4 points and 6.1 rebounds while shooting 67.6% from the field. Montverde finished the season with a 35-0 record and was labeled as the consensus No. 1 team in the country. He also received an honorable mention in the Jersey Mike's Naismith High School All-America team.
