Red Bull may use 2011 car in Pirelli tyre test

Red Bull Team Principal Christian Horner in a conversation with Pirelli’s Motorsport Director Paul Hembery

Team principal of Formula One team Red Bull Racing, Christian Horner, has stated that the team is analysing the option of conducting a tyre test for Italian tyre manufacturer Pirelli.

In the wake of the International Tribunal’s judgement on the controversial Mercedes tyre test, it has been highlighted that teams can use the current 2013 cars, provided that their intentions are clearly mentioned to the Federation Internationale de l’Automobile and approved by the governing body of motorsport.

While no team has consented on using a current car, likewise, Red Bull too are looking into carrying out the test using a 2011 car similar to the one conducted at Barcelona, by Ferrari, earlier this year.

“We will see, it is something we have to discuss with Pirelli,” Horner was quoted as saying by Sporting Life.

When questioned what the importance would be to Pirelli, Horner replied: “That is for them to judge, what they need and what they require from testing. Whatever happens it has to be done transparently. We don’t want people sneaking off behind closed doors – and wearing nondescript helmets.”

Pirelli motorsport director Paul Hembery claims they are pushing their case to use the current cars.

“We’re asking for a 2013 car,” Hembery told ESPN.

“We’ve got a couple of teams maybe interested in running a 2011 car and doing 1000km, which is good, but I think the big thing is we’d like to get the 2013 car run.”
