Chiriches in action for Tottenham against Anzhi Makhachkala

Tottenham Hotspur boss Andre Villas Boas is furious with defender Vlad Chiriches’s agent after he went on to say that his client joined Tottenham in order to show cross town rivals Chelsea his skills.

Boas dismissed those suggestions and stated that Tottenham “are not a stepping stone to anybody”, Belfast Telegraph reports.

The Romania international signed for Tottenham this season from Steaua Bucharest for a fee of £8.5 million.

The 23-year-old has already justified his transfer fee with a stellar performance for Tottenham in the 2-0 victory against Anzhi Makhachkala in the Europa League and going on to with the Man Of The Match for his performance.

The comments made by the players agent have not gone down well with the clubs faithful.

The agent, Victor Becali, stated that Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho has being eyeing the defender since his time as manager of Real Madrid and Chelsea will make an offer for Chiriches in two years if he finds his footing in England.

Tottenham boss Andre Villas Boas, who has Luka Modric and Gareth Bale leave the club for Real Madrid, has slammed Becali for his remarks.

“Obviously the comments are completely disproportionate and out of reality,” the 35-year-old said.

“I have spoken to the player, told the player to speak to the agent and we have acted accordingly.

“We consider ourselves a big club. We’re not a stepping stone to anybody.

“We don’t expect Becali to retract himself because it is not part of his character, but it was completely out of proportion the comments that he made.”

Chiriches may be among the substitutes when Tottenham face West Ham United on Sunday in the Premier League.

Tottenham currently sit third in the Premier League standing, just two points short of bitter rivals Arsenal.

Andre Villas Boas is thrilled with Tottenham’s strong start to the season and will be happy if they can take away three points on Sunday in the game against West Ham United.

“I think 16 points out of 21, and playing Arsenal and Chelsea, would be a good start for us.

“I think that game against West Ham will be a decisive game for us, to ensure that we have made a great, great start to the season.

“I think if we manage to do this with the fact we are not suffering and we are scoring also a lot, it will be major motivation going forward after the October stop.

“Also the October fixtures are a little bit easier for us and there is no difficult trip to a big team so we would like to progress from then on.”
