Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho leaps to the defence of Arsenal midfielder Mesut Ozil

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has jumped to the defence of Arsenal and former Real Madrid midfielder Mesut Ozil, after constant criticism of the German maestro.

Ozil joined the Gunners in September 2013 for £42 million and got off to an electric start at the club, with the fans instantly taking to him. However, Ozil’s form dropped and he began to suffer with various injuries which ruled him out for large parts of the campaign, which coupled with Arsenal’s dramatic loss in form.

He was heavily booed by fans before the World Cup in preparation friendlies, but Mourinho believes it is unfair on the Arsenal man and everyone should give the former Madrid man a break.

Ozil played under Mourinho during the pairs time at Los Blancos and Ozil, who recently responded to the continuous criticism, should be left alone according to the Chelsea manager.

Mourinho told reporters: “I think it’s hard to criticise him, because Ozil is Ozil.

“If you were expecting Özil to be super aggressive and to be running miles and miles from side to side and to show great enthusiasm and aggressiveness, this is not Mesut.

“If you are waiting for somebody where every time he touches the ball, the ball smiles.

“Every time he makes a pass, the ball goes with the right direction, the right speed, the right intensity, this is Özil.

“At the same time, I learned with him because we were together for quite a long time, that he’s a very sensitive boy.

“He needs confidence. He needs trust. He needs to feel that people is with him.

“When he’s on the pitch, every time he touches the ball, the ball goes beautiful – and he’ll always finds the right man on the right place.

“So, sometimes, you don’t see him, sometimes he doesn’t go to screen many, many times. But when he goes he is a special player.”Ozil had a 92% pass accuracy in Germany’s opening World Cup game.
