Rumour: Manchester United edging towards Schweinsteiger signing as bookies slash odds

Manchester United are edging towards sealing a deal for Bayern Munich star Bastian Schweinsteiger this summer.

According to Sky Sports, the Red Devils have made the German international a top priority signing in the summer transfer window. The 29-year-old came up through the ranks of the Bundesliga champions’ youth system and has spent his career with the Bavarian club.

After a highly improved number of bets following the recent speculations linking Schweinsteiger to United, Sky Bets have slashed the odds of the midfielder making a switch to Old Trafford.

“We’ve seen a flurry of bets on United signing Schweinsteiger this summer on the back of widespread speculation that he is Van Gaal’s primary target,” Sky Bet’s Head of Football Trading Paul Wiggins said.

“It remains to be seen whether it is merely punters following the news or whether it is genuinely informed money, but we’ve been forced to cut his price significantly, having offered 5/2 on Friday morning.”

“There seems to be little competition for his services at the moment, with Monaco next in the betting at 16/1 and attracting very little interest,” he added.

The Independent earlier reported that incoming United manager Louis van Gaal has made Schweinsteiger their priority summer signing after ending interest in signing his Bayern teammate Toni Kroos.

Kroos was rigorously scouted by the former Red Devils manager David Moyes. Unfortunately for the Scot, United showed him the exit door just 10 months into his six year contract.

Schweinsteiger has previously worked with Van Gaal while the Dutchman was managing the Allianz Arena outfit. According to the Express, Bayern manager Pep Guardiola does not favour the German midfielder and is looking to offload him in the upcoming transfer window.

United have seen their veteran midfielder Ryan Giggs end his playing career and will be Van Gaal’s assistant next season. In addition to this, Anderson is likely to offload this summer after his No 8 jersey was handed to the Red Devils’ January signing Juan Mata.

England international duo Michael Carrick, 32, has a few years left in him while Tom Cleverley and Marouane Fellaini hve been nothing but disappointing last campaign. The addition of Schweinsteiger to United’s squad in the summer transfer window is likely to bolster their midfield.
