Tottenham Hotspur manager Andre Villas-Boas is confident of signing a new contract with winger Gareth Bale at White Hart Lane.

“At the moment we are confident that Bale is under contract at Tottenham, and a very good contract that was sorted last year,” Villas-Boas was quoted as saying by Xinhua here Friday.

“So it (a new contract) is something we are speckling about but we haven’t had any further development.”

The 24-year-old star winger was reported earlier this week to have come to an agreement with Real Madrid and there were claims he had told the Spurs he wanted to leave.

“Talks are ongoing but it doesn’t mean that there is an agreement,” said Villas-Boas.

“The player is a special player and had a wonderful season last year. We recognise the level he was playing at. At the moment, we are extremely happy with his performance and happy with the condition that he has.”

Bale, who netted 26 goals in 44 appearances for Spurs last season, didn’t play in Wednesday’s 1-3 loss against Sunderland in the Barclays Asia Trophy because of injury.

“He is very near to recovery and I think we will only see him back in training in London,” the Spurs boss said before Saturday’s match against local club South China.
