Will the big Geordie step up?

The most prolific striker ever to ply his trade in the Premier League, England’s Alan Shearer believes that his Geordie mate Andy Carroll will flourish under the trained eyes of King Kenny Dalglish. If our readers would recall, Shearer was signed for Blackburn by King Kenny which kick-started his glorious career. The deadly striker is aware of the genius of the King, who is revered at Merseyside and believes that Andy Carroll is in good hands.

“Andy could not have a better manager. Kenny has the experience and know-how to bring out the best in him.

It was a great move for Andy Carroll.”

On Kenny’s summer signings and the journey that the Reds have embarked upon, under him Shearer gave his vote of confidence to the legendary Scot.

“In Stewart Downing, Charlie Adam and Jordan Henderson, Kenny has brought in three players who all have the passing, crossing and dead-ball skills to supply Andy.

“Andy is deadly with the right service. Get the right ball in to him and he is unplayable.

“I think that Downing will be a great signing too.

“He is a Liverpoool-type player, crosses a great ball and Andy will love playing with him.”When quizzed about the current hoopla surrounding Anfield and the sky-high expectations that the fans have from Kenny’s Red Army, Shearer was quick to play down the expectations claiming that it will be some time before the Reds emerge as serious contenders for the title.

“I think that it might be a step too far to expect Liverpool to win the league this season.

“But the Anfield fans are looking for progression.

“They have spent a lot of money and have a great manager in Kenny and their fans would expect them to be in a Champions League place this year.

“Kenny is at the right club. He loves Liverpool and they are made for each other.”Shearer was quite vocal about the required spending needed at his former club, Newcastle United. The all-time top scorer of the Premier League was adamant that Pardew needed to spend a significant chunk of Carroll’s transfer’s money in order to sign another striker, after the Bosman transfer of Demba Ba.

“Everyone was obviously disappointed that Andy Carroll left. But it was understandable when you look at the money they got for him £35million is a helluva lot of cash.

“Of course, you don’t want to lose your top players and Andy Carroll and Kevin Nolan were probably Newcastle’s two best players.

“I would be surprised of they did not go out and spend some more money. I hope that they do because they had a decent season on their return to the Premier League.

“If they can improve again next season – that is all the fans want.

“Last season was decent and now the supporters will be looking for Alan Pardew to take them into the top 10.”

Whether the legend’s prophecies will hold good in the turbulent English League or will they be blown away without much ado, will make for a great watch.
