Allen graduated from Texas A&M University with a B.B.A. in management.

His coaching career started in 2002 when he joined the Atlanta Falcons as their defensive quality control coach. He joined the New Orleans Saints in 2006 as their defensive line coach. The Denver Broncos hired him as their defensive coordinator in 2011. In 2012, he was hired by the Oakland Raiders as their 18th head coach. The Raiders struggled for the following two seasons, and Smith was fired from the team in 2014.

The New Orleans Saints recruited Allen as a senior defensive assistant in 2015 as Smith's coaching skills continued to advance over the years. Allen spent years working with the Saints and was finally promoted to the position of head coach in 2022.
