He also played football in the Nation Football League before his journey as a coach began for over a decade. In 1997, Vrabel began playing when he was selected by the Pittsburgh Steelers. In 2001, he joined the New England Patriots as a free agent. As a player, he played in Super Bowl XXXIV where the New England Patriots beat the St. Louis Rams by a score of 20-17. He scored a receiving touchdown in consecutive Super Bowls one in Super Bowl XXXVIII, and the other in Super Bowl XXXIX. In 2009, the Patriots traded Vrabel to the Kansas City Chiefs, and in 2010, Vrabel announced his retirement as a football player.
