J.J. McCarthy played his college football for the Michigan Wolverines and was the quarterback for the team. He spent three seasons playing for the Wolverines from 2021-2023 and led his team to a lot of success in those three years including a national championship in 2023. According to Bleachersreport.com, McCarthy is ranked as the fourth-best quarterback prospect in the 2024 draft class and is likely to be drafted in the very first round of the draft.


McCarthy started his college football career in 2021. In his sophomore season in 2022, McCarthy had a breakout year with 2,719 passing yards, 22 touchdowns, on 5 interceptions, and completed 208 pass attempts out of his 322. He also rushed for 306 yards and had 5 rushing touchdowns. In his final season with the Wolverines, McCarthy had 2991 passing yards, 22 touchdowns, on 4 interceptions, and completed 240 out of 332 pass attempts giving him a pass percentage of 72.3.


McCarthy accomplished quite a lot individually but also helped his team succeed equally. He led the Wolverines to a National Championship in 2023 (Michigan’s first championship since 1997). McCarthy also finished his college football career with a 27-1 record, giving him a win percentage of 96.4. This is the third-best winning percentage ever by a quarterback in college football’s history. McCarthy finished 10th in Heisman Trophy voting in 2023 but he won several awards such as Griese–Brees Quarterback of the Year in 2023, First-team All-Big Ten in 2023 and Second-team All-Big Ten in 2022.
