He was an all-around athlete in high school, as he was a state champion in both football and basketball for Saint Ignatius High School. He was a promising football player at the University of Louisville until a leg injury cut short his playing career. However, this unfortunate injury led him to become an NFL coach.
Gannon’s first step into coaching was at Louisville, where he acted as a volunteer and a graduate assistant. His NFL career in 2007, when he became the defensive quality control coach for the Atlanta Falcons launched his career in professional football.

Atlanta Falcons (2007)
Gannon's NFL coaching journey began in 2007 with the Atlanta Falcons. He was hired as a defensive quality control coach, following Bobby Petrino to the National Football League.
St. Louis Rams (2009-2011)
