The case of Kyler Murray is not that of your typical NFL player. That is because Murray as an athlete has reached the highest level in two professional sports; football and baseball. Since his high school days, Murray has been a dual sport athlete who excelled in both. As a result of which, he was even selected by the Oakland Athletics in the first round of the 2018 MLB Draft.

However, in the same year, Murray had a remarkable college football season as he led the entire Big 12 conference in passing yards with 4,361 and 42 passing touchdowns. He also set a Big 12 record in passer rating with an incredible 199.2. These numbers and his overall play earned him the Heisman Trophy thanks to which he decided to not play in the MLB. Entering the 2019 NFL Draft, Murray was selected as the number one overall pick by the Arizona Cardinals.

Since joining the Cardinals in 2019, Murray played in and started all 16 games during his first two years although his best result in year two was a record of 8-8. In 2021, Murray missed a couple of games due to an ankle injury before which he and the Cardinals were the best team in the league with a 7-0 start. 2022 has been Murray’s worst year in the league as of now and he suffered an injury late in the season adding to his woes.

Is Kyler Murray still injured?

Unfortunately for Murray, 2022 was a disaster as the team fell to 3-8 in the 11 games that he started. While facing the New England Patriots in a week 14 clash, Murray suffered a knee injury which was later updated as a torn ACL. This incident took place in mid December 2022. Since the injury, Murray hadn’t been vocal about it during the offseason, however recently he opened up and detailed his horrific experience on the Arizona Cardinal’s Youtube series ‘Flight Plan’.

On the play that injured him, Murray was running with the ball and while trying to make a cut went down immediately in what is termed as a non contact injury. In the episode, he can be seen saying that the first couple of weeks after the surgery were absolutely terrible as it was very difficult to move on his own.

When will Kyler Murray return to football?

As of now Kyler Murray is still undergoing the recovery process and taking things day by day. He has started training and getting his fitness levels up to the mark. If everything goes according to plan, he is targeting week 1 of the 2023 NFL season as his return date. However, there is still some time to go before that and all will depend on his further recovery.

Kyler Murray’s career so far

Prior to the injury that forced him to end his 2022 campaign earlier than he would have liked, Murray was playing as the starting quarterback with the Cardinals for the past four years. With a 25-31-1 win-loss-tie record, he hasn’t exactly gotten the team firing on all cylinders. As the former number one pick in the draft, the Cardinals were a struggling team back in 2019 and they pinned their hopes on Murray.

Although Murray's game was on the rise each year, 2022 proved to be a difficult journey. In each of his first three years, he threw for over 3,700 yards while his 2022 season saw that stat fall to only 2,368 yards. Now, it will be interesting to see how Kyler is able to bounce back from the injury and whether his return can spark a much needed change for the franchise
