Why did Russell Wilson go to Denver?

Last Modified Mar 6, 2024 04:53 GMT

Russell Wilson, a quarterback who is 5'11", is one of the best players in NFL history. Wilson, a 2012 draft pick, helped the Seattle Seahawks win the Super Bowl in 2013 and helped them advance to the playoffs on several occasions. One of only five quarterbacks in NFL history with a career passing rating of over 100, Wilson has been selected for nine Pro Bowls.

Despite being a terrific player, Russ was only a two-star recruit when he entered the NFL. Even so, he went on to become one of the best players having had an amazing career with the Seahawks. Wilson was then traded to the Denver Broncos in 2022. While the Broncos went all-in to sign Wilson giving up a boatload of draft picks as well as trading three of their own players, Wilson and the team struggled mightily in the two seasons they have been together.

The Broncos have decided that once the new NFL year starts in mid-March 2024, they will be releasing their QB1 before his contract extension kicks-in.

What made Russell Wilson choose the Denver Broncos over other teams?

When we talk about reasons, there could be many reasons why he left the Seahawks but we can boil it down to three reasons which are as below;

He wanted a fresh start. Russell Wilson had been with the Seattle Seahawks for 10 seasons, and he felt like it was time for a change.

He wanted to play in a better situation. The Seahawks had not been to the Super Bowl since 2014, and they had missed the playoffs in two of the previous three seasons. It looked like the Seahawks were not going anywhere with Russ still on the team.

He wanted to play in a more pass-friendly offense. The Seahawks had a run-first offense under Pete Carroll, and Wilson felt like he was not being used to his full potential. The Broncos were the best fit for him. Denver plays a more pass-first kind of offense which aligns with Russell.
