The tall and slender frame of Jacksonville Jaguars’ newest franchise quarterback, Trevor Lawrence is a sight to behold on the football turf. Lawrence, a native of Knoxville, Tennessee was a very highly regarded prospect coming out of his high school. When he got to college football, he had convinced many of the experts and analysts of how good he really was and had the talent and the physicality to go with it.

Lawrence was selected as the number one overall pick by the Jaguars in the 2021 NFL Draft. With a 1-15 win-loss record in the previous season, which was the worst in the league, the Jaguars earned the right to take the first overall pick. Adding Lawrence to their roster was an easy decision for the Jaguars as he is expected to do brilliant things on the field.

Before the 2021 season began, Trevor was already handed the reins of the team and in all fairness to him, it was always going to be an uphill battle to change their fortunes at the first go. His rookie season turned out to be horrible as the Jaguars only improved their record to 3-14 and Lawrence led the league with 17 interceptions. What's more is that, he had less touchdowns than interceptions with only 12 to his name. But, in 2022, he turned things around by leading the team to their first division title since 2017. While we await the kick-off to the 2023 NFL season and see how much Trevor has further improved, we can take a look at his past and find out just exactly why he is considered to become one of the best in today’s game.

Trevor Lawrence’s Early Life

Trevor was born to Jeremy and Amanda Lawrence on October 6, 1999 in Knoxville.

In an interview with David Franklin on Cartersville UNCUT, Trevor’s mother described him as a boy who had high energy from when he was just a small kid. He was always into sports and has played baseball, basketball, football and soccer just to name a few. Trevor’s father went on to say that he was interested in football and started playing competitively from the age of six, but he could throw the ball easily between the ages four and five.

Trevor Lawrence’s High School

Trevor Lawrence, who was born in the city of Knoxville, spent only about six years there as the family moved to Cartersville, Georgia in 2005. As a result of which, he attended Cartersville High School where he played basketball along with football. At Cartersville, he had tremendous performances as he led the team to 41 straight victories from his sophomore year all the way to his senior year. Those wins also included two state championships and four region titles. Easily regarded as a five star recruit, and one of the best quarterback prospects of all time, he decided to continue developing his game at Clemson University.

Trevor Lawrence at Clemson

Deciding which University to attend is never an easy choice, but Trevor decided to commit to Clemson due to their sincerity and what they wanted him to get out of the college and not the other way around. Lawrence could not have asked for a better start to his college career as he led the Tigers to an undefeated regular season record, then defeated Pittsburgh in the ACC Championship Game on their way to the college football playoffs. They won the 2018 Cotton Bowl Classic against Notre Dame and then defeated Alabama in the College Football National Championship game.

With such an impressive record and performance in his freshman year, it was tough to replicate the same in his sophomore and junior years. Having said that, he still performed admirably and his college career ended with various honors such as:

  • CFP national champion (2018)

  • CFP National Championship Offensive MVP (2018)

  • ACC Athlete of the Year (2021)

  • ACC Player of the Year (2020)

  • ACC Offensive Player of the Year (2020)

  • ACC Offensive Rookie of the Year (2018)

  • First-team All-American (2020)

  • 2× First-team All-ACC (2019, 2020)

  • Second-team All-ACC (2018)

Now that Lawrence has had time to adjust to the professional league, and with the team putting pieces around him in his third year, there will be a lot riding on the shoulders of the young Jaguars’ signal caller. Whether he can live up to his expectations is the question everyone is waiting to find out
