The 2017 NFL quarterback draft class was looked at as a race between three guys, Deshaun Watson, Mitchell Trubisky, and Patrick Mahomes. These three were the frontrunners in consideration to be selected in the first round. The big question at the time was who would be the first one off the board.

With the first pick belonging to the Chicago Bears, they held all the cards. The Bears, while ignoring Watson for the most part, were looking at Mahomes and Trubisky but the overall consensus was that they were sold on the North Carolina alumnus. Looking for a new franchise quarterback with whom the Bears could build the future around, they decided that Trubisky was the right man for the job.

Getting the first break from college football to the NFL is no easy feat, but sustaining that level and performing consistently enough to remain at the forefront for years to come is equally challenging. And this is exactly the unfortunate case of Mitchell Trubisky, a one-time prospect looked at as the next big thing, who has now been delegated the backup role on his third team in six years.

Mitchell Trubisky’s NFL Start

The Bears were running some weird tactics in 2017. They had just gone out to get themselves their number one prospect but they didn’t start Trubisky until the fifth game of the season when they were already 1-3. Questionable management, surprising coaching decisions, and an overall forgetful first year for Trubisky ended with him finishing 4-8 as a starter in the 12 games he played.

With his rookie year done and dusted, there was a lot of hope going forward for Bears fans and management in general. And in some ways, the excitement was true to a certain degree as 2018 was a big step forward. The team clinched their division and with it a playoff berth as well. Unfortunately, that season proved to be a one-off exception as the same problems cropped up again with the management, and coaching staff at fault on some level, but most importantly Trubisky just couldn’t remain consistent enough in his play.

For the next two seasons, bad decisions and turnovers plagued Trubisky who was quickly losing the faith of the franchise as a whole. And evidently, Trubisky’s time with the Bears came to an end and he departed to become the backup to Josh Allen and the Buffalo Bills in 2021 on a one-year deal. Extremely limited game time in Buffalo didn’t help his cause, forcing him to search for other options.

Mitchell Trubisky’s Current Status

Before the 2022 season got underway, the former Bears’ signal caller joined the Pittsburgh Steelers and was given the starting job. Trubisky got off to a slow start from the get-go and never looked to recover from it. Over the course of seven games in which he played, he had more interceptions than touchdown passes and just over 1,200 passing yards. The bigger issue was that he just couldn’t inspire the team to succeed.

As a result, just a few games into the season, Trubisky lost his QB1 status in favor of the younger Kenny Pickett and has been the backup ever since. Heading into the 2023 season, Trubisky has signed a two-year extension with the team but has his work cut out if he wants the starting role once again. The important factor for Trubiksy to consider is that he is still very young and has a few more years to work on his game and get back to the level that was once projected for him not too long ago.
