Will AEW be able to turn the CM Punk controversy into a major return angle?

AEW star CM Punk has become a polarizing figure in the promotion, with fans and allegedly the roster divided between him and The Elite. However, Sportskeeda Senior Editor Bill Apter believes this could work in the promotion's favor.

While reports have shed some light on what exactly could have happened during the "Brawl Out Incident," fans online already made their minds up months ago. To this day, CM Punk and Elite fans continue to bicker in comment sections about who was in the wrong.

During the latest episode of Sportskeeda's The Wrestling Time Machine, Bill Apter explained how AEW could turn the controversy around CM Punk into revenue.

“A lot of people have said he’s a cancer in the dressing room? There are a lot of cancers in the dressing room in a lot of companies. I’ve seen it since the seventies! But if a company can successfully make money with someone? That cancer is Chemotherapied very quickly.” [01:22 to 01:41]

Bill Apter believes that CM Punk's AEW drama has only increased his star power

Punk is yet to break his silence on what really happened at the "Brawl Out Incident," and many believe that the relationship between the star and AEW is volatile. However, according to an Inside The Ropes report, both parties are on good terms.

Earlier in the same episode, Apter argued that despite the heat he keeps getting, the audience's appeal to see him is higher than ever.

“You know, the more he does this, the more unwelcomed he might be but the more money he’ll make for a promotion if he comes [back]. This is the internet age. People want to see him, the fans want to see him. He’s angry. He may be doing a lot of this to rile up going back somewhere.” [00:55 to 01:22]

Many have urged AEW to do what's best for business when it comes to CM Punk and to ignore the few roster members who might have problems with him. It remains to be seen if Tony Khan will put the promotion over those who reportedly dislike one of his biggest stars.
