Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) beat Mumbai Indians (MI) by 18 runs in yesterday's IPL 2024 match at the Wankhede in Mumbai. In what was the last league game for both sides, LSG put up 214-6 after being asked to bat. Nicholas Pooran clobbered 75 off 29, while skipper KL Rahul contributed 55 off 41. MI responded with 196-6 .

Lucknow got off to a poor start as Nuwan Thushara trapped Devdutt Padikkal leg before for a golden duck with a swinging delivery. Marcus Stoinis looked dangerous during his stay at the crease but fell for 28 off 22, trapped lbw by a googly from Piyush Chawla as he completely missed his sweep.

Deepak Hooda (11) was the next to go, brilliantly caught by a leaping Nehal Wadhera at backward point off Chawla. Having reduced LSG to 69-3 inside 10 overs, MI had the upper hand, but Pooran played another whirlwind knock, adding 109 for the fourth wicket with skipper Rahul.

Pooran struck five fours and eight sixes in his innings, while Rahul hit three fours and as many sixes. The former struck Anshul Kamboj for two fours and two sixes in the 13th over.

He raced to a 19-ball 50 by clobbering Arjun Tendulkar for consecutive sixes. The over was completed by Naman Dhir, who conceded two fours and a six.

The scintillating stand ended when Pooran was caught at long-on off Thushara. Arshad Khan perished first ball as the MI pacer claimed two-in-two.

The fielding side completed a team hat-trick when Rahul swept the first ball of the next over from Chawla to short fine leg. A handy cameo from Ayush Badoni (22* off 10) took LSG past the 210-mark.

Rohit hammers quick-fire 68, but MI falter in chase

Chasing 215, old warhorse Rohit Sharma gave Mumbai Indians hope, slamming 68 off 38. The former franchise skipper struck 10 fours and three sixes in a typically aggressive knock, dominating an opening stand of 88 with Dewald Brevis (23 off 20).

Rohit slapped Matt Henry for two stunning sixes in the second over. The opener raced away to a 28-ball 50, smashing Mohsin Khan for two fours and a six in the seventh over.

The opening stand was broken when Brevis sliced a full-toss from Naveen-ul-Haq towards wide long-off after having struck the pacer for a four and a six in the same over. Suryakumar Yadav fell for a duck, slamming a sweep off Krunal Pandya to deep backward square leg; Ravi Bishnoi taking a good catch on second attempt.

Bishnoi was in the action again as he got Rohit to miscue a drive and had the MI opener caught at short third man. The horror run for skipper Hardik Pandya (16) continued as he upper cut one from Mohsin to deep third man. Wadhera (1) then mistimed a wrong'un from Bishnoi to long-on.

Dhir gave the Wankhede crowd something to cheer towards the end of the match, clobbering five sixes and four sixes in his 62* off 28. He ended the game with a superb six over extra-cover off Naveen-ul-Haq, but MI had fallen way behind in the contest by then.
