The Ashes 2013 – 3rd Test,Day 2: Peter Siddle's late burst gives Australia the advantage

Michael Clarke added 62 runs to his overnight score before he was dismissed for 187

As Australia resumed the day at 303/3, England pace bowlers found it difficult to penetrate the defences of Michael Clarke and Steve Smith for the second consecutive day in a row. However, Graeme Swann struck in his very first over of the day to pick up Smith for 89 runs.

David Warner coming in at no.6, did not last long either. Again, Swann was the wicket taker. Having brought up his 150, Clarke continued to pile on the runs from one end. But, before he could get to his double century, Stuart Broad picked him up for 187 of 314 balls. Swann then sent Peter Siddle back to the hut for just one run to claim his fifth wicket of the innings.

With the scoreboard reading 430-7, Mitchell Starc and Brad Haddin put together 97 runs in 19.3 overs to take Australia to 527/7. Australia declared with both Starc (66 off 71 balls) and Haddin (65 of 99) remaining not out.

England had 32 overs left to see off the day. Having had a look at how much the pitch assisted Swann when he was batting, Clarke introduced his off spinner Nathan Lyon as early as in the 7th over of the innings. The move worked as he consistently troubled the England batsmen. However, he was extremely unlucky not to pick up a wicket.

As the day approached to an end, Siddle gave Australia the upper hand by picking up the wickets of both Joe Root and night watchman Tim Bresnan. Alastair Cook and Jonathan Trott managed to see off the remaining overs without any further damage as England ended the day with 52 runs on the board for the loss of two wickets.
