Guardiola has some thinking to do in the summer transfer market

The 2016-17 season is drawing to a close. Clubs across Europe are keeping close tabs on players they'll like to sign to strengthen their squads to challenge for more silverware next season. There'll be clubs who'll miss out on the coveted Champions League while some will make a return to it.

There'll be clubs who'll return to Europe and will be in need of more players to cope up with the extended schedule of games while some will invest money to strengthen themselves on a domestic level. Let's take a look at the five clubs who're likely to spend the most this summer:

#1 Manchester City

Having missed out on silverware this season, Pep Guardiola is likely to go all guns blazing in the transfer market. Most of his midfielders, defenders and goalkeepers at Manchester City have failed to adapt to his style which is likely to lead to a mass exodus at the Etihad this summer.

Manchester City's top transfer targets include a goalkeeper, at least four defenders comprising one at each position as well some reinforcing in the central midfield where he has failed to find the ideal combination suited for his style.

In addition to this, if rumours of rifts with Argentinian striker, Sergio Aguero are true, then he'll be going for a striker as well. With Guardiola likely to go for big names or upcoming talents in a few of these positions, it'll take quite an amount of cash from the City reserves to make this happen.

#2 Manchester United

Manchester United will spend big again this summer after a poor league finish

The red half of Manchester is having an okayish season by their standards. Manchester United men have been pretty average in the league and even though they've won the League Cup, they will finish outside the top five in the Premier League. Jose Mourinho’s side and are looking for an entry back to the Champions League by winning the Europa League against Ajax later this month.

Manchester United will be pretty active in the transfer market, like they have been in the past couple of years. Zlatan Ibrahimovic is out of contract this summer and is suffering an injury which will keep him on the sidelines till early 2018.

David de Gea is likely to join Real Madrid while the midfield is ageing and poor when compared to other top sides in Europe. Wayne Rooney, Luke Shaw and Matteo Darmian's future at the club are also in question at the moment.

There could be additions in defence also with Mourinho expected to add a centre-half and a full back to his existing squad. There could be big name additions so that Manchester United can challenge for the League and be a force in Europe as well next season.

Barcelona could spend big once again as some of their summer signings have struggled

The Catalan giants are having an internal crisis at the moment. They have failed to move on after the exit of Xavi and an ageing Andres Iniesta isn't helping their cause well enough. They've not been razor-sharp and have been caught a few times in the past in recent times against big opponents.

The likes of Andre Gomes, Paco Alcacer, Lucas Digne have failed to live up to expectations while Jordi Alba has been inconsistent. There could be an exodus in the summer with defence and holding midfield being an absolute priority for the next coach who'll be announced by the club in the days to come.

A club in transition, it is expected they'll shell out as much as possible to plug as many holes as they can to regain superiority in the league and in Europe as well.

Bayern are expected to spend big to replace their retiring stalwarts

On the verge of completing his first season at Bayern, Carlo Ancelotti has had far from a satisfactory season. He'll only be landing the Bundesliga with far less conviction and dominance than his predecessor, Pep Guardiola.

With assurance from Karl-Heinz Rummenigge that Ancelotti will be Bayern's coach next season, the club is looking to bring in fresh feet having already signed Nicklas Sule and Sebastian Rudy in pre-season deals.

Names of big players like Alexis Sanchez and Marco Veratti are doing the rounds with negotiations with Alexis reportedly underway. They'll not come cheap and the club could sign a keeper along with a fullback too to keep adequate reserves and options to choose from as per requirements as exits of Douglas Costa, Rafinha and Jerome Boateng could be on the cards. Xabi Alonso and Philipp Lahm will hang up their boots and they’ll need to be replaced as well.

Emery is likely to be backed with good cash after a sub-par season

Still struggling to meet success in Europe, and facing stiff competition domestically from a rejuvenated AS Monaco, Paris Saint-Germain did some shopping in January to bring the like of Julian Draxler and Goncalo Guedes. However, they're expected to go even further this summer.

A striker like Antoine Griezmann or Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is on the cards, which will cost huge money. Addition reinforcements in the midfield and defence are expected with Marco Veratti likely to leave the club for greener pastures this summer.
