Edinson Cavani could be better off at Man City than Real Madrid

Edinson Cavani has been linked to the biggest clubs in Europe and with the forward’s goals to games ratio it is easy to see why. Having been part of an exciting attack minded Napoli team which has entertained in Serie A, it would make sense for Cavani to make a move to similarly attack minded club. This is why Man City would be a suitable option for him. He could emulate his record at Napoli assisted by Silva and Aguero and with City signing Jesus Navas to strengthen their forward line further and maybe even Spanish attacker Isco, Man City will most likely play with an attacking set up. He’d be perfect as the advanced striker.

Cavani is not just a classic number 9 upfront, he is much more than a target man or back to goal forward. He is a complete forward. With this in mind, adding him to the devastating cavalry of attacking players behind him would suit City. Being a complete forward means not only having the ability to hold the ball up it’s about the movement, anticipation and willing to take a gamble inside the box. Outside the box is all about the selflessness to pass when a shot is not the best option. Cavani is world class in this role, having shown his ability to both score and make goals. He has proven himself an excellent decision maker, the hardest skill to find.

If Real Madrid sign Cavani it might stutter his career. It’s a privilege to play for Real Madrid and Man City are not at that level yet, however signing for a club of such prestige for a hefty sum doesn’t mean you will play regularly. Real Madrid have so many attacking options, and so much money that he’d by no means be the first name on the team sheet. When a player signs for a big amount at a club with as much pedigree as Real Madrid it doesn’t automatically guarantee a place in the starting eleven. Benzema, Kaka and Modric have found playing time limited even though they all cost at least £30m.

If Cavani signs for City for the £52m it would take to get him from Napoli, he will become the club’s record signing. This would give him more starts as City would have to justify the outlay. Even for them, spending over £50m is unprecedented, so, he will be the man. When Ronaldo signed for Real Madrid as the player they paid most for in their history, he repaid them in his performances and goals return. Cavani will surely have the same impact in England.

Cavani signing for City would be a great coup for the club and for the Premier League. If City can beat both Chelsea and Real Madrid to Cavani, it will show that they are no one season wonders. Cavani coming to City may see Dzeko move the other way, this would benefit both the players and Man City. If Cavani doesn’t sign for City, hopefully he will continue to entertain in European football in the same way has he has for Napoli over the last few seasons.
