19:30 (IST)12 MAY 2024

We come to end of out first match of the day and how befitting it is of the Chennai Super Kings to win it and give their beloved home fans a game to remember! This means that their playoff hopes are alive and kicking and also, a possibility of MS Dhoni returning to the ground for at least one match in those playoffs! For the Rajasthan Royals, it is about heading to Guwahati now and ending this three-match losing streak. They are in contention to qualify alright, but just that it isn't getting official yet. With that, we, the pair of Soorya and Bidipto, bid you good bye! You can join us here for the second match of the day which has just begun. Keep following Sportskeeda!

19:25 (IST)12 MAY 2024

Simarjeet Singh (Player of the Match, 3/26 in 4 overs): (Initial feeling) I enjoyed bowling on this surface, even if the weather was hot and humid! (On what it took to execute the plans) It was challenging to execute the plans, but I was clear about what lengths I needed to hit and how often I needed to change pace. (On whether things are pre-planned all the time) Nothing was predetermined as such, but the conversation with the captain was on all the time. I am glad that I came out with three wickets and managed to keep the runs in check.

19:22 (IST)12 MAY 2024

Ruturaj Gaikwad (Chennai Super Kings captain): (First thoughts) Wonderful feeling! Last home game of the league stage, so great to get this win! (What he felt when the start was good with the bat) I think once we were around 55/1 in the power play, we were cruising. But one or two wickets here and there does make it tricky, still, with our batting, we were always in the ascendancy. (On the pitch) We like pitches like these, but it also means that our batters have to take much more responsibility! When the wicket is slow, and one side is bigger, it's always helpful to bowl slower balls into the pitch.

19:16 (IST)12 MAY 2024

It's time for the post-match presentation!

19:15 (IST)12 MAY 2024

Ravichandran Ashwin was seen having a chat with MS Dhoni post the game. All smiles there between two of the finest of this sport - one a Chennaiite by birth and another adopted by the city. The CSK players are going around for a lap of honor to thank the crowd considering this is their last round-robin fixture of the season.

19:14 (IST)12 MAY 2024

Daryl Mitchell (Chennai Super Kings): Obviously really nice to get over the line on what is a slow wicket. I thought the way the boys bowled up top, put pressure on them and restricted them was great. The way we bowled in the powerplay with the newer ball, we built some pressure on them and asked them to take some risks. I'm not sure what number was par, it's harder in day games. But it was nice to restrict them and chase it down. It's just working in partnerships. For me when I come in, (it's about) recognizing the new ball is the best time to bat. And obviously Rutu then got the job done. It's working with your partner and having communication with each other - matchups and who you can take down. And when they're bowling well, just getting off strike. Always happy, it's pretty cool to play in front of a crowd like this. Noise like this makes us feel lucky.

19:10 (IST)12 MAY 2024

Sanju Samson (Rajasthan Royals captain): Right after the powerplay, the message was the wicket was a bit slow, maybe a bit two-paced and the bounce wasn't as expected. After the powerplay and while I was batting in the middle, the score we were expecting was around 170. But we were 20-25 runs short to be honest. They knew the conditions better than us and the youngster (Simarjeet) bowled very well. (On the toss decision) Honestly we are not very sure on what to expect when you travel. Looking at the wicket we thought batting first might be better. But when you know what's the score to chase, batting second they had a better idea. We were expecting the wicket to get slower in the second innings but I think it was a touch better. When you play a night game at Chepauk it's a no-brainer to chase with the dew coming in. In a day game, the summer tends to heat the wicket up. I expected the wicket to slow up but they also batted well. Taking the game to the 18th over was a good job. In this tournament it's normal to think of qualification but the chat in team meetings is to focus on what is in our control. I would like to tell my teammates in the debrief to focus on what we can control. We are playing some decent cricket, it's not like we are playing bad cricket. Just focus on the process and hopefully we come out on top next game.

Chennai Super Kings win by 5 wickets with 10 balls to spare!

Ruturaj Gaikwad 42* (41) | Simranjeet Singh - 3/26 (4)
Riyan Parag 47 (35) | Ravichandran Ashwin - 2/35 (4)

The beginning from Rachin Ravindra, the carry forward of that start by Daryl Mitchell, the cameo from Shivam Dube and the anchoring of the innings by skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad did it for the home side! In the last home match of the group stage, Chennai Super Kings gifted their fans a really important win to keep their hopes of qualifying for the playoffs, well and truly alive!

It was slightly surprising that Rajasthan Royals chose to go with Nandre Burger as the Impact Sub and not Keshav Maharaj, but the bowling was overall from all the bowlers was not quite up to the mark.

Spin did tell a tale, as both the frontline spinners spun a web and picked up 3 wickets between them, but they went for 47 runs and needed to pick up more scalps, given the nature of the surface.

Pace on the ball was helping the batters today. That didn't change in the second innings. Pace was not taken off all that intelligently by the Royals fast bowlers and it had a bearing on the result in the end. Overall fielding from the Royals also needed a lift, but they weren't quite sharp enough to be honest today!

Even though MS Dhoni did not bat, the crowd got to watch an amazing win by their favourite team. Chennai Super Kings have completed 50 victories in the IPL at the Chepauk now!

Rajasthan Royals have to wait just that bit longer to qualify for the playoffs but are well placed in the table to do so, at second. But this wait is getting too long, in a way! Chennai move to 14 points and go to third in the ladder for the moment.

19:04 (IST)12 MAY 2024

18.2 Trent Boult to Sameer Riz

FOUR! DONE AND DUSTED! Wide full toss as this one slips out of his hands and it sums up a tough day for RR. Rizvi throws his hands at it and scythes it flat over point for another boundary to wrap things up in style. Chennai Super Kings keep their playoff hopes alive with a 5-wicket win!

18:59 (IST)12 MAY 2024

The scores are level.

19:04 (IST)12 MAY 2024

18.1 Trent Boult to Sameer Riz

FOUR! SHOT! Overpitched just outside the off stump and Rizvi creams a cover drive. Gets half-forward and laces it through the gap along extra cover and wide of mid-off to send it scorching to the fence

18:58 (IST)12 MAY 2024

Trent Boult [2.0-0-16-0] comes back into the attack.

One big hit away now are the Super Kings. Will they finish it off with a six or will they prefer doing it in ones and twos? Either way, the game is for them to lose here.

19:03 (IST)12 MAY 2024

End of over 18 (8 runs), Chennai Super Kings 137/5

Ruturaj Gaikwad 42(41)
Sameer Rizvi 7(6)
Nandre Burger 21/1

19:03 (IST)12 MAY 2024

17.6 Nandre Burger to Ruturaj Gaikwa

another bumper closer to the off stump. Ruturaj sways his head out of the way to let it zoom over

19:02 (IST)12 MAY 2024

17.5 Nandre Burger to Ruturaj Gaikwa

AH! Flies through as he goes back of a length well outside the off stump. Ruturaj hangs his bat out with an open face before it zips past the outside edge

18:56 (IST)12 MAY 2024

Wrong length at 138 clicks and put away in style!

19:01 (IST)12 MAY 2024

17.4 Nandre Burger to Ruturaj Gaikwa

SIX! BOOM! Banged in short outside the off stump and Ruturaj takes it on with a pull as he picks the length and gets into position. Clubs it powerfully over square leg as the ball soars into the stands. Just one hit away now are CSK!

19:00 (IST)12 MAY 2024

17.3 Nandre Burger to Sameer Riz

back of a length slower delivery with width outside the off stump. Rizvi opens the face and runs it down to third man for one

18:55 (IST)12 MAY 2024

Why not cut it than dab it, Sameer?

19:00 (IST)12 MAY 2024

17.2 Nandre Burger to Sameer Riz

back of a length with width outside the off stump. Rizvi opens the face looking to scythe it behind backward point before it flies through to the keeper

18:59 (IST)12 MAY 2024

17.1 Nandre Burger to Ruturaj Gaikwa

around the wicket and angling in full at the stumps. Ruturaj gets forward and pushes it towards long on for a single

18:53 (IST)12 MAY 2024

Nandre Burger [2.0-0-13-1] comes back into the attack.

Boundaries at this stage will hurt the Royals. But again, they won't be able to defend these runs. They have to bowl attacking deliveries that pick up wickets. It is the only way they can pick up a win here. Ans of course, misfields won't help!

18:58 (IST)12 MAY 2024

End of over 17 (8 runs), Chennai Super Kings 129/5

Ruturaj Gaikwad 35(37)
Sameer Rizvi 6(4)
Sandeep Sharma 30/0

18:58 (IST)12 MAY 2024

16.6 Sandeep Sharma to Ruturaj Gaikwa

full outside the off stump. Ruturaj takes a step forward to pat it to short extra cover as he tees off. The fielder runs in with a dive but cannot gather the ball cleanly

18:57 (IST)12 MAY 2024

16.5 Sandeep Sharma to Sameer Riz

goes short this time at the stumps. Rizvi stands tall and pulls to deep square leg for one

18:51 (IST)12 MAY 2024

Daksh: The throw was not even going to hit the stumps. You should consider it as a case of obstructing only when the ball is going to hit the stumps. Pretty sure we have the required technology to do that.

18:56 (IST)12 MAY 2024

16.4 Sandeep Sharma to Sameer Riz

FOUR! BEATS PARAG! Low full toss at the stumps as he misses the yorker. Rizvi transfers weight onto the front foot and flicks it aerially over mid-wicket. Parag charges to his right from long on and puts in a dive but he signals a boundary himself as he confirms that his body made contact with the ropes while trying to stop the ball

18:56 (IST)12 MAY 2024

16.3 Sandeep Sharma to Sameer Riz

AH! Clever slower bouncer outside the off stump. Rizvi waits an eternity before attempting what seems to be an upper-cut. The ball lobs over his bat to the keeper though

18:55 (IST)12 MAY 2024

16.2 Sandeep Sharma to Ruturaj Gaikwa

slower good length delivery outside the off stump. Ruturaj stands tall and knocks it towards long on for another run

18:54 (IST)12 MAY 2024

16.1 Sandeep Sharma to Sameer Riz

back of a length outside the off stump. Rizvi stands tall and works it down to long on for a single

18:49 (IST)12 MAY 2024

Sandeep Sharma [2.0-0-22-0] comes back into the attack.

If only the Royals can chip in with a couple more wickets now, the game will open up completely! Chennai need to make sure that runs keep coming every ball. That should do it for them.

18:53 (IST)12 MAY 2024

End of over 16 (5 runs), Chennai Super Kings 121/5

Ravindra Jadeja 5(7)
Ruturaj Gaikwad 33(34)
Avesh Khan 12/1

18:53 (IST)12 MAY 2024

15.6 Avesh Khan to Ruturaj Gaikwa

length delivery outside the off stump. Ruturaj taps it to short cover from his crease

Sameer Rizvi, RHB, is at the crease as the Impact Sub for Daryl Mitchell.

18:46 (IST)12 MAY 2024

Harsh: It is not fair with Jadeja

18:45 (IST)12 MAY 2024

It's time for the final strategic time-out of the match.

18:42 (IST)12 MAY 2024

Is that a case of Jadeja coming in the way of the throw on purpose? Can well be you know! And here we go, he is run out! Not too sure if the throw would hit the stumps direct, but it's just what the Royals needed at this stage!

18:47 (IST)12 MAY 2024

15.5 Avesh Khan to Ravindra Jadeja

NEARLY A RUN OUT! Back of a length outside the off stump. Jadeja opens the face and runs it late to deep third before turning back for the second. Ruturaj is ball-watching and uninterested in the run as the throw comes to Samson, who then has a shy at the stumps at the other end. Jadeja cops a blow on his back though and well well - we have an appeal for obstructing the field! Now did he change his track intentionally upon watching the ball?

Anil Chaudhary reckons he changed his track on purpose having watched the ball and then turned around. He adjudges this OUT! Jadeja and Ruturaj have a chat with the umpires but the former has to make the long walk back. Gosh this is some moment in the game!

Ravindra Jadeja out obstructing the field 5 (6b, 0x4, 0x6)

18:46 (IST)12 MAY 2024

15.4 Avesh Khan to Ruturaj Gaikwa

full around the off stump. Ruturaj gets forward and works it off his wrists to long on for one

18:46 (IST)12 MAY 2024

15.3 Avesh Khan to Ruturaj Gaikwa

another slower one into the surface outside the off stump. Ruturaj brings out the upper-cut over where a slip would have usually been stationed. Runs down to third man for a brace

18:40 (IST)12 MAY 2024

Devansh Tripathi: I think RR has lost this match

18:45 (IST)12 MAY 2024

15.2 Avesh Khan to Ruturaj Gaikwa

slower short delivery dug into the track outside the off stump. Ruturaj stands tall and scuffs a pull off the toe-end to short mid-wicket

18:39 (IST)12 MAY 2024

Is that the match the Royals just missed?

18:44 (IST)12 MAY 2024

15.1 Avesh Khan to Ravindra Jadeja

GONE WITH A DIRECT HIT! Back of a length delivery at the stumps. Jadeja punches it from his crease to short cover and tees off for a run. A direct hit would have meant curtains for Ruturaj who continues to ride his luck with these risky runs today!

18:38 (IST)12 MAY 2024

Avesh Khan [1.0-0-7-0] comes back into the attack.

Now, both Chahal and Ashwin are done with their respective spells. So does Samson turn to Riyan Parag for an over or two of off-spin? Maybe that is the right thing to do on this surface. But the required rate now is less than the current rate, which is another thing to consider for the Royals. Wickets, that's their only savior here!

18:42 (IST)12 MAY 2024

End of over 15 (9 runs), Chennai Super Kings 116/4

Ravindra Jadeja 3(4)
Ruturaj Gaikwad 30(31)
Yuzvendra Chahal 22/1
