It has been some time since WWE started looking towards other superstars to fill John Cena’s spot. That aim has never been as resounding as it has been this year.Sure, Cena did not main event Wrestlemania last year but last year’s Wrestlemania was all about Daniel Bryan being at the peak of his popularity. This year has been all about the coronation of Roman Reigns as the next face of the company. Cena, since then, has taken a backseat but anything he’s involved in is ought to get the utmost attention. Here’s his Road to Wrestlemania 31.

#1 Journey since 2014

2014 was the one year where cena’s invincibility was at its most vulnerable. It was a year like no other for the face who runs the place. He was on the recieving end of some brilliant Bray Wyatt mind games and then he became the go-to guy to hold the WWE World Heavyweight Championship after Daniel Bryan got unprecedently injured.

He then went onto being decimated by Brock Lesnar. Demolished. That wasn’t something one could have expected from Cena. The later part of the year saw the thousandth match between him and Orton and the 37year old also interacted with all three former members of The Shield individually.

Also, his team kicked out the Authority with the help of Sting and then he was forced to reinstate him. Quite an eventful, topy-turvy year for him.

His wrestlemania plans only became concrete in the beginning of 2015.

#2 Momentum heading into Wrestlemania 31

A lesson in respect- that has been the cornerstone in setting up Cena’s premiere feud of the year in motion. He has a very credible opponent who has transformed himself to be one of the best heels of the past year.

Cena’s momentum suffered when he lost to Rusev at Fastlane. It was quite momentous for the Russian whose submission move rendered Cena unconscious.

After Cena tried to enter the Andre The Giant Memorial battle Royal, Stephanie McMahon came out to show Cena what she thought was his righful place and rejected his offer to compete in the Battle Royal.

This is a precarious situation for the biggest moneymaker of the present era. And WWE is showcasing how he’s losing his hold as the leader of the WWE.

He goes into Wrestlemania knowing that he’ll be booed but he also walks into Wrestlemania knowing that his time on the top of the mountain is up.

#3 What to expect at Wrestlemania 31

Despite Cena being shoved away by almost everyone around him, he’s been showcasing some great performances over the past week. His interactions with Rusev have made the feud one of the better feuds in recent times.

And maybe, just maybe, Rusev will lose his streak to Cena at Wrestlemania. That looks highly possible because if Cena loses, that’s some major setback for the Cenation leader. But if Rusev loses, that’s an even major setback for the Russian who’s just beginning his career.

It seems that the more logical option is to have Cena lose at Mania because that’ll be some major character depth for the 15-time world champion. It’ll be quite a fall from the top and maybe a great story may come out of his ‘comeback’ from so many losses.

#4 Immediate aftermath post Wrestlemania 31

If Cena loses, which is what should logically happen, we may be in store for a show where Cena may not even give a lengthy promo, congratulating his opponent and all that jazz.

Cena will be unanimously booed out of the building since it will be the Raw after Wrestlemania but he may just let all of that heat get to him and feel unsettled at this gravitational pull away from the top of the WWE hierarchy, albeit fictionally.

This may not be the time for a Cena heel turn. This may be the time when Cena takes time off to think things out about his career. Absence may just make the heart grow fonder and hence a more favorable reaction from the audience.

#5 Future stock leading to Wrestlemania 32

At this point, everything is up in the air. It may well depend on how Roman Reigns’ push is dealt with. If it works, Reigns will undoubtedly find himself at the helm of affairs during Wrestlemania season and Cena may face him to pass the metaphorical baton officially.

Till now, Cena is expected to take a backseat to the Roman Empire. If the Roman Empire comes crashing down then Cena will find himself leading the company for a while until WWE comes up with something else. But the main objective will be to pass on the major responsibilities slowly but steadily from Cena to the nect face of the company.
