WWE News: AJ Lee evades question about CM Punk getting fired, comments on the usage of the term "Diva"

AJ Lee is glad that WWE abolished the term ‘Divas’

What’s the story?

Former WWE Superstar and Divas Champion AJ Lee recently spoke to USA Today. During the interview, Lee spoke about her wrestling career and the term ‘Divas’ being dropped from WWE programming.

However, Lee chose not to answer the question about CM Punk’s current status with WWE.

In case you didn’t know...

CM Punk left the WWE on bad terms after he felt that the talent in the WWE were being ill-treated. Punk had worn himself out working a very demanding schedule, and his booking at WrestleMania against Triple H also frustrated him.

Punk walked out of the company the night after the 2014 Royal Rumble, never to return. Punk then went on record on the Colt Cabana Podcast to air his grievances and reported that WWE had sent him his termination papers on his wedding day, which he termed as a vicious ploy by the company to ruin the most special day of his life.

The heart of the matter

AJ Lee refrained from commenting on the WWE vs. CM Punk situation, saying that the issue was under litigation and that she could not reveal any details on the matter.

AJ, however, spoke on the usage of the term ‘Diva’ in WWE. She mentioned that calling the female Superstars Divas was offensive and deprived their characters of other dimensions.

She pointed out that she wanted to refine the term, and had also mentioned it in one of the promos during her title reign. AJ said that she was glad that the current generation has broken through the glass ceiling existing in the WWE. She said that the abolition of the term ‘Diva’ was the best thing that she could have wished for the female roster in the WWE.

What’s next?

AJ Lee’s position in the company was under scrutiny after CM Punk was sued by WWE physician Dr Chris Amann. Lee left the company soon after WrestleMania 31 and has not returned since.

The chances of AJ Lee returning to the promotion are slim with the WWE suing CM Punk for defamation and false accusations against Dr Chris Amann.

Author's take

It is a known fact that the female Superstars in the WWE have come a long way in the past couple of years. After being treated as eye candy for the better part of a decade, the Four Horsewomen brought about a paradigm shift in the WWE propelling women’s wrestling to the forefront.

However, it cannot be denied that the work other women such as AJ Lee, Mickie James, Trish Stratus, and Lita put in before them, formed the cornerstone of the success of the ‘Women’s Evolution.’
