WWE News: Kevin Owens appears on Talk Is Jericho

Kevin Owens used Jericho’s podcast to address a number of issues

Kevin Owens has been fire after his win on Monday Night RAW two weeks ago. Be it in his first match as the champion against Sami Zayn or his promo during his “KOronation”, Owens has been impressive, to say the least. And he has been backed by his so called best friend Chris Jericho. Jericho informed the WWE Universe last week that Owens is the longest reigning WWE Universal Champion.

Owens recently made an appearance on Jericho’s online show, Talk is Jericho. Kevin Owens discussed a number of issues including the fact that he was not aware of the outcome of the match until about 5 o'clock that night.

The podcast kicked off with the best friends discussing what the championship meant to Owens. Owens said that the Universal title was essentially the same that was held by the greats like Shawn Michaels, Stone Cold, Bret Hart and even Jericho. He revealed that he became a fan of wrestling after watching Shawn Michaels and Diesel go at it at WrestleMania 11. He said that his father would often bring home tapes and buy pay per views for him and he would watch them meticulously.

Owens pointed out that the title change at WrestleMania 12 when Shawn beat Bret set him on his path of becoming a pro wrestler. He concluded by saying:

Through all the different names and variations of the title, and seeing Shawn win at Mania 12 and saying to myself, someday, I want to be champion, and here we are.

Jericho then went on to talk about the naysayers, who despite the “You deserve it” chants, ridiculed the WWE’s decision to go with Owens as champ. This was in a way pointed to Jim Cornette and Vince Russo, both of whom have been critical of Owens. Owens said that Cornette always complained that he would not do what he was told, but that was not the case.

Owens said that he was always pegged as the guy with a bad attitude only when people didn’t see eye to eye with him. Owens said that he wouldn’t listen to Cornette because he did not share that vision. Owens also spoke about Vince Russo’s idea that KO wasn’t main event material. Owens added that Russo had made similar statements about Finn Balor and Sami Zayn. He feels it best not to respond and give Russo the attention that he craves.

Owens discussed his relationship with Vince McMahon. Owens made it clear that he didn’t talk to Vince a lot, but it was more than the others in the locker room. He added that he would approach Vince whenever he had a question for the WWE Chairman and to Owens, Vince is not as intimidating as he comes off to many.

Owens also said that it was an honor having Triple H literally hand him the title. He thanked Triple H not just for the win but for everything “The Game” has done for his career.

Owens also shed light on whether his look was an advantage or a disadvantage by saying that it makes him look different. He said that there were advocates for both for and against it and that was what he enjoyed.

You know, my look had people on polar opposite on sides; whether it looks horrible or sets me apart, to me, I like it, I like that some people hate or love it. I love the confrontation.
