Colby began played basketball at Pinson Valley High School in Pinson, Alabama. He primarily plays as a power/small forward for the Iowa Hawkeyes men’s basketball team.

As a sophomore at Pinson, Colby averaged 23.9 points, 7.9 rebounds and 3.9 assists per game. He faced a coaching change at Pinson and transferred to Mountain Brook High School in Mountain Brook, Alabama. As a junior at Mountain Brook, Colby played under coach Bucky McMillan. He averaged 14 points, five rebounds and three assists per game. His high school won its third straight Class 7A state title. Colby Jones and his teammate Trendon Watford had a vital role in this success.

Following his senior year, Colby left his high school and started playing college basketball for Xavier over Alabama, Auburn, UAB and Georgia. Due to COVID-19 contact tracing, the first five games of the regular season were cancelled. On January 10, 2021, Colby played his first match for the college team against the Providence Friars men’s basketball team. During his freshman season, he averaged 7.7 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 2.9 assists per game. Additionally, Colby was selected to the Big East All-Freshman Team.
