Jonathan Clay "JJ" Redick, the head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers, is a former NBA player with experience spanning more than a decade. However, in June 2024, when he was announced as the 29th head coach of the Lakers, he was criticized for being a first-time coach. He was the head coach of the fourth-grade boys team at Brooklyn Basketball Academy, where his 9-year-old son played. He set multiple records throughout his four years at Duke University as a shooting guard for the men's basketball team. Along with setting records for the most straight free throws (54), a league-high 95.3 per cent from the free throw line, and 2,769 career points, he became the top scorer in the Atlantic Coast Conference's (ACC) history.

According to ESPN, Redick was selected in the first round of the 2006 NBA Draft by the Orlando Magic, where he spent seven seasons. He played for six teams during his 15-year NBA career, including the Philadelphia 76ers and the Milwaukee Bucks, before spending one season with the Dallas Mavericks in 2001 and retiring from basketball in September 2021. After retiring, Redick joined ESPN as an on-air sports analyst. He joined Ryan Ruocco and Richard Jefferson on ESPN's second core broadcast team in August 2023. He was transferred to Mike Breen and Doris Burke's lead staff in February 2024, taking Doc Rivers' place. A few months later, in June, he left ESPN to be the Lakers head coach.

JJ Redick’s parents are Ken and Jeanie Reddick. He was born in Cookeville, Tennessee, in the United States. Catie and Alyssa, his older twin sisters, played for Campbell University. David, his younger brother, played football at Marshall University as a tight end before deciding to retire from the game because of an injury. After that, he and JJ went to Orlando, but he later returned home to attend Virginia Tech.

Abigail, his youngest sister, was a basketball player at Drexel University and Virginia Tech. In his early years, Redick was referred to as "JJ" since his twin sisters echoed his first moniker, "J." Redick majored in history and minored in cultural anthropology when he graduated from Duke University.
