Premier League Results: Gameweek 9 - United, Liverpool and Arsenal register important victories

Manchester United 3-2 Stoke City:

Wayne Rooney of Manchester United in action with Ryan Shawcross of Stoke City during the Barclays Premier League match between Manchester United and Stoke City at Old Trafford on October 26, 2013 in Manchester, England.

Goals from Robin Van Persie, Wayne Rooney and Javier Hernandez helped Manchester United register a 3-2 victory, coming from behind twice to ward off a spirited Stoke City performance at Old Trafford.

First half, dominated by Stoke City, saw plenty of action. Manchester United’s only shot on target, before Robin Van Persie slotted in a short-lived equaliser, was a long range effort from Wayne Rooney which was easily dealt by Asmir Begovic.

Peter Crouch opened the scoring for Stoke City in the fourth minute, which also happened to be his first goal at Old Trafford. David de Gea made a stunning save only to see it being deflected back by Jonny Evans straight into Crouch’s legs, who made no mistake. Erik Pieters started all the trouble by sending in a teasing cross from the left flank.

Stoke continued to press as United look lackluster at the back and if not for De Gea, who made crucial saves, they would have been down by two more goals. The equaliser eventually came when Begovic parried Wayne Rooney’s header straight into Van Persie’s way who brought some relief to David Moyes and the fans who had gathered.

Much to their agony, just two minutes later, Marko Arnautovic’s superb curling shot into the right top corner of De Gea, who could not do much but palm it, gave Stoke the advantage again going into the break.

The second half did not look distinctly different but against the run of the play, two headed goals in a span of three minutes from Rooney (78′) and Hernandez (80′) delivered Manchester United a thrilling win as David Moyes breathed a huge sigh of relief.

Liverpool 4-1 West Bromwich Albion:

Luis Suarez of Liverpool celebrates his first goal as Boaz Myhill of West Bromwich Albion looks dejected during the Barclays Premier League match between Liverpool and West Bromwich Albion at Anfield on October 26, 2013 in Liverpool, England.

An unstoppable Luis Suarez ripped West Bromwich Albion apart into shreds at Anfield to give Liverpool a comfortable and a much needed victory that has taken them to the second spot in the points table.

While the first goal in the 12th minute of the game was a stunning solo strike, Suarez beating a defender and nutmegging the other to find the back of the net, the second one, five minutes later, had a lot of fortune attached to it. The ball fell in place for the onrushing Uruguyan international who had no problems whatsoever in slotting that home, leaving the goalkeeper Boaz Myhill stranded.

As the game resumed, Suarez completed his hat-trick, first at Anfield, when he met Steven Gerrard’s perfectly delivered free-kick. A dejected West Bromwich were just waiting for the final whistle as a Suarez-led Liverpool romped home.

James Morrison scored a consolation goal for the away team through a penalty in the 66th minute. Eleven minutes later, Daniel Sturridge added one to his name to pile more misery.

Crystal Palace 0-2 Arsenal:

Mikel Arteta (2ndR) of Arsenal celebrates scoring his penalty with Mesut Oezil (L) and Per Mertesacker (R) during the Barclays Premier League match between Crystal Palace and Arsenal at Selhurst Park on October 26, 2013 in London, England.

A 10-man Arsenal held on to a 2-0 victory against Crystal Palace courtesy of goals from Mikel Arteta, who was also the one to be later red-carded, and Olivier Giroud at Selhurst Park.

Arsenal enjoyed a bright start to the game despite Mathieu Flamini being subbed off in as early as the 8th minute after sustaining a groin injury. He was replaced by the 18-year-old Serge Gnabry. For all their possession, the Gunners had nothing to show at the end of the first half as the attackers continued to be sloppy in the final third.

Crystal Palace had done exceptionally well to fend off Arsenal and as expected it proved to be too much for them to continue on the same note. As soon as the second half begun, the Gunners were awarded a penalty as Gnabry was fouled by Adlene Guedioura, one which was converted by Mikel Arteta with a powerful shot to the goalkeeper’s right.

Arsenal then launched a series of attacks and it looked like the home team were in for a long night, despite some bright spells for them in front of Arsenal’s goal. A red card was dished out to Mikel Arteta, for bringing down Marouane Chamakh on a Crystal Palace counter-attack. Arteta was the last man standing between Chamakh and Wojciech Szczesny, but they were 40 yards clear.

Referee saw it as a clear-cut goal scoring opportunity and decided to act upon it, a decision that brought life into the game. Szczesny had to pull off a spectacular save, deflecting a Mile Jedinak-volley, to keep his team ahead just seconds after Joel Ward’s long range shot rattled the crossbar.

Just when Arsenal were looking like they were hanging onto the game, Olivier Giroud eased the nerves by heading home the winner in the 87th minute of the game, assisted by Aaron Ramsey.
