Breaking news from Paarl: The Match has been Abandoned without a ball being bowled
Right then, we have some news. Cricket South Africa (CSA) along with the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) have agreed to delay the start of this game. The England players and management went underwent an additional round of testing as two members of the hotel staff tested positive for COVID-19. The start of this match has been delayed as ECB awaits the results of the tests conducted on Saturday evening.
The first ODI was initially scheduled to be played a couple of days ago on the fourth of December. However, a player from the Proteas squad tested positive for COVID-19, a fact that caused the game to be postponed. The new schedule will witness two back-to-back clashes today and tomorrow followed by the final match of the series set to be staged on Wednesday. A news that will propel the spirits of cricketing pundits and players alike is that the entire South African squad tested negative for the deadly virus, which clears the way for the series to be held starting today.

England has begun this tour on a bright note, whitewashing the Proteas in the three match T20I series. The visitors dominated proceedings, securing comprehensive wins in all three games. Interestingly, England won all three matches while chasing and are yet to bat first in this tour. Their three wins were by 5 wickets, 4 wickets and 9 wickets respectively with the first two matches going right down the wire.

The World Cup winning team will have momentum on its side coming into this three match ODI series. However, they will be missing out on some pretty big names with star all-rounders Ben Stokes and Sam Curran along with their pace spearhead Jofra Archer being rested for this series.

Such is the quality of players that England possess that they might not even miss the services of those players. Jason Roy has not been at his best and this might be a perfect opportunity for him to get back in the mix of things. Jonny Bairstow was in scintillating form in the T20I series and will be looking to garner some big runs in this series as well.

Joe Root makes a comeback after not being part of the T20I squad and will be looking to remind the world of his credentials. Skipper Eoin Morgan will play a key role in finishing games and will most likely be assisted by Jos Buttler and Sam Billings that may prove to be a nightmare for a South African bowling side sans Kagiso Rabada.

Moeen Ali might get his first match in this tour and might partner Adil Rashid to handle the spin department. Mark Wood and Chris Woakes were not part of the T20I squad and will be looking to make an impact in this series. Olly Stone, Reece Topley or Tom Curran might get a go too and with two encounters scheduled in two days, there is a good chance that England might test their bench.

The South African squad too will not be at its very best with their batting mainstay, Faf du Plessis, and speedster Kagiso Rabada not being part of the squad, which serves as a massive blow to their chances in this series. The youngsters in the squad have an opportunity to display their calibre. Quinton de Kock will handle the captaincy duties yet again and will look to play some big knocks.

Kyle Verreynne will be looking to consolidate his place in the eleven should he be given a go today. Janneman Malan scored a magnificent century against Australia earlier this year and will most probably make the eleven while Jon-Jon Smuts might also be presented with the opportunity to become a mainstay for the Protea.

Their squad will be boosted with the presence of David Miller and Andile Phehlukwayo while the team management will have a happy headache regarding the selection of spinners in the team. Tabraiz Shamsi was decent with the ball in the T20Is while veteran Keshav Maharaj too has been added to the squad. George Linde too can be considered by de Kock as a wicket-taking option against a mighty England side that bats deep.

The onus of handling the pace attack will rest on the shoulders of Anrich Nortje, Lungi Ngidi and Andile Phehlukwayo. With Beuran Hendricks proving to be too expensive in the T20Is, he might not make the eleven while Lutho Sipamla and Junior Dala might be tried out later in the series.

Right then, even with this format of the game taking a backseat in lieu of the T20I World Cup next year, this series promises to be nothing short of absolutely electrifying. England will go in as definite favourites but should be wary of the South African side, which will be looking to exact revenge after a horrific T20I series. A hectic schedule to follow but both these teams will be looking to give their best and with some big names missing, hopefully find some exciting future prospects along the way.
