His college career was successful, seeing him as the first walk-on player to win the Heisman Trophy.

At Texas Tech, Mayfield was a starter in his first year, amassing 2,315 yards and 12 touchdowns. He completed 218 out of 340 pass completions. For his performance, Mayfield was awarded the Burlsworth Trophy and the Big 12 Conference Freshman Offensive Player of the Year. By the end of his first season, Mayfield announced he would be leaving the team after alleged scholarship issues as claimed by the quarterback.
