According to league sources, Sean Payton, the former coach of the New Orleans Saints, has been asked to interview with the Houston Texans for the head coach position.

After 15 years with the Saints, Sean Payton retired from the position of head coach in January 2022. He retired with a regular-season record of 152-89, a postseason record of 9-8, a Super Bowl win, and Coach of the Year honors.

The Arizona Cardinals and Denver Broncos are also looking to interview Payton. After retiring last year, the 59-year-old worked for the Fox network as an NFL commentator. While Payton might be looking to return to the NFL, he will have to wait until January 17th, to have official interviews with the NFL teams.

When talking about his potential return to the NFL on Sunday, Payton said that the quarterback position of the team won't be the main factor in his decision-making process. Sean Payton said:

"I think that it's really about the triangular relationship—ownership, front office, head coach. When we went to New Orleans—and I say 'we' because there were a lot of people involved—the quarterback was unsettled at that time. So I think ownership and the functionality of the front office is most important."

The Houston Texans have also sought interviews with Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson, San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator DeMeco Ryans, Philadelphia Eagles defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon, and Denver Broncos defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero.

Although the Texans are projected to be among the worst teams in the league in 2023, they still have the No. 2 and No. 12 selections in the first round of the 2023 draft. If Sean Payton joins the Texans, he will have to walk a rough road ahead. However, his expertise and experience can turn things around for the Houston Texans, who are desperate to remove the "worst team" tag from their name.

Houston Texans are looking for third head coach in three seasons

After Houston's 2020 season got off to a 0-4 start, Bill O'Brien was sacked. Since taking over as the team's head coach in 2014, O'Brien has a 52-48 record with four postseason appearances. Romeo Crennel, the interim head coach, took his post.

David Culley was subsequently hired by the Texans for the 2021 campaign, but he was dismissed after the team went 4-13. Following a 3-13-1 record, Lovie Smith, the team's head coach in 2022, was recently fired.

Since the Houston Texans dismissed Culley and Smith as the two black head coaches in consecutive seasons, the team has been criticized. The Houstons are having a tough time and it's difficult to picture anybody succeeding given the team's current performance.

They need someone like Sean Payton, but will he be willing to join a team that has been under-performing over the last few seasons? Payton will get good offers from other NFL teams that are in a much better situation than the Texans.
