Swift signed a four-year, $8.5 million contract with the Lions in July 2020. He teamed up with Adrian Peterson and Kerryon Johnson in the backfield during his first NFL season. He scored his first career rushing touchdown in September 2020, his professional debut. However, in the closing seconds of the game against the Chicago Bears, he failed to catch a pass that would have won the game.

Against the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 6, Swift ran for 116 yards and two touchdowns, making history as the first rookie running back for the Lions to accomplish it since Barry Sanders in 1989. He recorded 149 scrimmage yards and a receiving score in the 30-27 victory against the Washington Football Team in Week 10.
